866.0. "Bagels to make aliya?" by TAV02::SID () Thu Jan 11 1990 14:52

>So far the only offer is from Alan Goldman in TAVland...

Hey, I'm all for that -- it will be interesting to see what effect the
poor response time will have on the frequency of contributions of
Bagel regulars.
It will be even more interesting to see if the Bagel contributors
who refuse to visit Israel because we're so evil (Karen, are you still
there?) will extend their boycott to the conference once it moves to
this imperialist racist state.

(... sorry for starting a new note -- the original is write-locked.)

    Sid,

    Perhaps we'll now get the chance to re-engineer NOTES to support
    Hebrew !!! If BAGELS makes aliya, it'll have to talk in the local
    language.

    Hmm .... I'll have to speak to the system manager about disabling NOTES
    over Shabbat .... can't have TAVENG profaning Shabbat on non-life
    preserving work :-) :-)

    								... Monty

    P.S. Seriously though .. much as we would like BAGELS to double the
         aliya figures from America, you should all be aware of the
         response time degradation.
866.2Do we need a satellite link ?? :-)KOBAL::SAGALWed Jan 31 1990 22:2316
    Hmm,

    It feels like this NOTES conference has been put under "Cherem",
    excommunication, since it has moved to Asia. There seems to be a
    deafening silence :-) :-)

    I thought at first it might me due, to the L O N G .... zzzzz
    response time, but its not TOO bad reading from ZKO.

    On the positive side, reading BAGELS on TAVENG is much faster.

    Are the regulars finding it difficult to read BAGELS now that it is far
    away ? Perhaps you can all speak to your managers and they'll fund a
    satellite link :-) :-)

866.3can we mail the readership?IOSG::LEVYQA BloodhoundThu Feb 01 1990 14:009
    Mr Moderator,

    Can you mail the registered readers of bagels so that they might
    know the new location? I'm sure that many of the occasional readers
    will not know where bagels has gone to.

    Thanks,

866.4The announcement in EASYNET_CONFERENCES is defectiveDECSIM::GROSSThe bug stops hereThu Feb 01 1990 18:318
One problem is that the announcement in TURRIS::EASYNET_CONFERENCES still claims
that BAGELS is read-only on node LBDUCK and that the transfer to TAVENG is
still pending (note 893.15). I'd be glad to complete the announcement, but it
carries more weight when one of the moderators makes the entry.

(The response time here is no worse than when BAGELS was on node GVRIEL.)

I agree that there should be some communication to a braoder audience. If
you weren't on the systems for the latter part of last week, you missed the
move and there is nothing on GVRIEL:: to mention any forwarding address...
Took me a few days to find where Bagels had gone (and a bit of panic!).

866.7not bad...TAZRAT::CHERSONmaintain an even strainThu Feb 01 1990 19:408
    The response time for me isn't that worse than before. If you lived in
    both Cambridge and Israel, than queuing up is second-nature to you. of
    course we could form an Israeli line, via width instead of length, ;-.

    As to informing the public, I believe that there is a distribution list
    that could be utilized for that purpose.

   It is seven hours later in Israel than in Mass. Your 12 noon
   is our 7pm. TAVENG is in Herzlia, about ten minutes north of
   Tel-Aviv.
866.10Let My People Know!IAMOK::ROSENBERGDick Rosenberg VRO5-1/D7Fri Feb 09 1990 20:1416
    I think some sort of general announcement (via MAIL) is in order. I was
    under the impression that node GVRIEL:: was going to move along with
    the person GVRIEL:: :-). When I tried to access it I kept getting
    "remote node unknown". I kept looking at my local copy of EASYNOTES.LIS
    (which I thought was being updated regularly), and it kept saying the
    conference was at GVRIEL::BAGELS. I finally got it through my thick
    head to look and SEE if I had a current version of EASYNOTES.LIS. Mine
    was dated sometime in November (so much for technology). When did BAGELS
    come up on TAVENG? I found out today, Feb 9, about 10 minutes ago. I
    suspect others are in the same boat.

    BTW, reponse so far for me is fine.

866.11A strong recommendation against EASYNOTES.LISKOBAL::CLTVAX::dickDick Schoeller - Failed XperimentFri Feb 09 1990 21:1431
There are a few reasons why I have not mailed out:

    1) The last time that I tried such a mailing I got bombarded with responses
	telling me that I shouldn't fill their mailboxes with clutter.
    2) It takes an incredible amount of system resources.
    3) The move was announced WELL in advance (unlike the last time 8^{).
    4) The announcement was made in TURRIS::EASYNET_CONFERENCES (from which
	EASYNOTES.LIS is generated).
    5) I made my new mailing address known when the announcement was made and
	people can mail me for the info. It is also available in VTX ELF.
	If you use FIND/FULL SCHOELLER you will no problem figuring out which
	one is me   8^{).

GVRIEL did indeed move with me. However, in this day and age of overextended
networks, I ended up with an address in a hidden area.

BAGELS could not move with me because my new group was not able to dedicate the
resources to it. So we went our separate ways.

As mentioned in item 4 above, I made the appropriate announcement. I strongly
recommend AGAINST relying on EASYNOTES.LIS. Instead refer either to
TURRIS::EASYNET_CONFERENCES or VTX. Make use of the technology to track the
technology 8^{). Maybe if we say it often enough in enough places these kind
of problems will go away.

If I get 2 or 3 free days to clean up the mailing list (that's what it takes
when it is this far out of date) I may send out a mailing. That is not likely
to happen for a few months 8^{(.

Shabbat Shalom,
Gavriel

    Can't help noticing that there are currently a lot of links to the
    Notes Server on TAVENG (in excess of 20), but no new notes.

    Could one of the moderators have inadvertently locked the Conference
    and thrown away the key ? :-( :-)

866.13Not write lockedCLT::GVRIEL::SCHOELLERWho's on first?Wed Feb 14 1990 19:4116
Shalom Monty,

No BAGELS is not write locked. There is a known problem with VAXNOTES V2.0
where it occasionally fails to delete dead links. The way to identify this
situation is to MCR NCP SHOW KNOWN LINKS and look for a link with NOTES$SERVER
in the "Remote user" column. If you find such a link then use MCR NCP
DISCONNECT LINK n. Where n is the number of that link (first column). This
will free up a whole slew of links.

I have a .COM file which resubmits itself occasionally and cleans up these
links. If someone with privs on TAVENG wants it, send mail. It should be
changed to submit/noprint if you have a sys$print que. A better approach is
to get V2.1 which (I believe) fixes the problem.

L'hit,
Gavriel

    Gvriel,

    My note was rather "tongue in cheek", in as much as I noticed that a
    lot of people had accessed Bagels, but no new notes had been entered.

    Anyway, I can see that BAGELS has now woken up from hibernation :-) :-)

    Finally found it. Thanks for the wonderFULL communication

    P.S.

    For some reason, I modified my note to WBANK:: and got
    a node unknown. Oooh well how times are changing.
