859.1 | A few alternatives | 4GL::SCHOELLER | Who's on first? | Wed Dec 27 1989 10:23 | 67 |
| The following is compiled from some old soc.culture.jewish info.
TEMPLE TRACKER (described below) was developed by Ellen Franklin, the rebbetzin
at Temple Emanuel in Providence. I don't know how good it is but Temple
Emanuel seems happy with it. (Of course they may be a little biased 8^{).
L'hit,
Gavriel
I don't know who is distibuting the software but about a year ago
the people at:
B.M.H. Congregation
560 South Monaco Parkway
Denver Colorado 80224
Attn: Rabbi Stanley Wagner
did a complete market survey and are now using a very good package which
covers all of your requirements and a lot more. As far as I know, some
of the software was originally developed for churches and then adapted for
synagogues.
If you write to the good rabbi, mention my name and give regards.
Lots of luck,
Benjamin Cohen
I just got around to reading my Jewish Action (the OU) magazine
from last winter. In it is an ad for TEMPLE TRACKER
(the definitive name in synagogue administration software).
It operates on IBM PC and compatibles.
I have never used or seen it. It says for more info contact:
Ellen Franklin
Arlington Associates, Ltd.
195 Arlington Ave.
Providence, R.I. 02906
(401)-273-1341
In reply to the request for Temple Management software for the
IBM PC and compatibles:
I am aware of a company in Chicago which produces and sells
Jewish oriented software, primarily for the Mac, but also for the IBM...
I know that they have a number of word proccesors in Hebrew, and a
number of educational products in both Hebrew & English. I belive
they also have "Temple Management" software, but you should find
out about that.
The company: Davka Corp.
The phone #: 1-800-621-8227
Talk to: Rabbi Alan B. Rosenbaum,
Rabbi Irving Rosenbaum
or anyone else I suppose...
The address: (I think)
845 Michigan ave.
Water Tower Place
Suite ???
Chicago, Il.
Zip??
Again, I am not sure 'bout the details but they are a wonderful
company to work with. Good Luck.

| Thanks for your help. I spoke with the Davka folks, who were very
helpful. I will probably follow up on the others also.

I belong to Temple Beth Am in Framingham. You may wish to call
Jeff Katzif (DTN 223-1156). Jeff is in charge of our computer
systems. We bought Temple Tracker and had to modify it to fit
all of our needs a few years ago. Jeff knows what is available
in the marketplace.

| I have a couple of friends who own a company in Springfield MO. that specializes
in Church Management Software (the same basic things that a temple does ie
membership, dues, contributions etc..) They use an Alpha Micro based multi user
systems but are working on MSdos based single user systems also. They do
purchaseing of the base hardware and software and will install and provide
support (phone or on-site). They are currently the system of choice for the
Assemblies of God Church.

This is from an old card so the address might have changed (they are/were
moving to a larger suite of offices).

859.5 | Not quite the same thing... | ENTRE::LUWISH | | Sat Jan 06 1990 20:30 | 7 |
| Although a church-management package does much of what you would want
in a synagogue-management package, I doubt if it would manage
yahrzeit-reminder mailing lists (and other functions dependent on the
Jewish calendar) or print bi-lingual bulletins such as the Davka
package claims to do.

859.6 | Valuing Differences | CECV01::ISRAELITE | | Sun Jan 07 1990 14:23 | 14 |
| I have learned quite a bit about some of the differences and it is
rather amusing to me. You learn alot about what is important to folks
by what their software tracks (I should say here that I am not making
judgements about the differences, only that I hadn't thought about them
before). For example, the church management products I have reviewed
all handle donations, but they are tracked by envelope number. A
friend of mine told me that this is so you can pass them in without
anyone knowing about it. The products also tracked attendance at
services and sermon topics.
In general, however, there are enough differences that church products
won't work for a temple.

859.7 | Temple administration conference | MEMV02::WEENER | MEM Finance Information Technology | Wed Jan 17 1990 12:50 | 10 |
| In case you didn't catch the announcement in last week's Jewish
Advocate - On January 21st at Temple Mishkan Tefilla in Chestnut
Hill is a Temple Administration conference. 1 day made up of seminars
and a display of temple automation products. May be worth catching.
Another package to look at is MacShamas (I forget the name of the
manufacturer).

| Understand that after having sold the TEMPLE TRACKER SYSTEM to a
Temple, support is minimal. Any comments??
Thank you,
