842.0. "Why no weddings on the sabbath?" by HPSCAD::TWEXLER () Wed Nov 29 1989 14:47

A question for all...

Why is the tradition that weddings should NOT occur on the sabbath? My
understanding is that the Orthodox tradition is for weddings to occur an hour
after sundown ... and many variations exist depending on your rabbi and your
particular branch of Judaisim.

I have heard it said that the main reason is a Jewish prohibition (?) against
having two joys at the same time and thus lessoning the celebration that each
deserves. This same reasoning might prevent double weddings...

But, I wonder, where did that saying came from? Is that the only explanation
others have heard?

Curious,
Tamar

I assume you meant that *Saturday* weddings occur an hour after sunset.
Weddings can be at any time of day -- certain days are forbidden.

Exactly. There's another reason, namely that kinyan (very loosely,
acquisition) is a part of the wedding ceremony, and kinyan is forbidden
on Shabbat. There's also a problem with witnesses signing the ketubah.

In Eastern Europe, it was common for weddings to be held on Friday
afternoon, so the wedding meal would be a Shabbat meal -- people were
too poor to afford two big meals.

Another reason I read about is that having the wedding on Saturday
night may tempt people to make ready for it on Shabbos, which is not
    allowed.
