811.0. "Help on Israel Trip Needed" by RESTRT::SCHORR () Mon Oct 23 1989 11:25

I will be traveling to Israel in late December (12/21 - 1/4) as part of a
AJC tour. This is a gift from my father on the occasion of my son's
Bar Mitzvah. I will be sending most of my time in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem,
with the obligatory stop at a Kibbutz. I have a few questions that have
come up and would like to know if there is anyone who can advise me on
some logistical issues, like restaurants. I would much like to stop and
meet with the Israeli Bagelites, but I'm not sure of my schedule. For
some reason my tour is reversing their normal pattern so I don't know
exactly what and where I will be yet.

    Thanks in advance,

    Warren

811.1AJC is a great program!RADVAX::WAKYOnward, thru the Fog...Mon Oct 23 1989 13:1112
Warren -

I visited Israel with AJC and they do a fabulous job. They are very organized
and will tell you exactly what kinds of preparations to make. If they still
offer a program where you meet with an Israeli of your own profession, that's
when you may be able to meet up with fellow Digits; I spent a half day at the
Jerusalem office and it was one of the best parts of my trip!! I'm jealous...

If you are lucky enough to have one of their best ACE guides, Michael Enav,
you are twice blessed!

    Warren,

    As Waky says, AJC does a fabulous job. In each city, your guide will
    more than likely invite you to dinner (Dutch treat) at one of his/her
    favorites. If you don't like the style of cuisine, the guide will
    suggest others more to your liking. I recall dining at an excellent
    Chinese restaurant and a deli-style place in Jerusalem, and a middle-
    eastern place in Tel Aviv, all at the suggestion of our guide, Yossi
    Ashkenazi. We even found an American-style hamburger place on our
    own.

    On parts of the tour -- e.g., kibbutz visit -- you won't have much
    choice. It's either eat there or starve until evening.

    One thing we found a small problem with was the relative ages of the
    other members of our tour -- mostly (much) older; many retirees -- tend
    to slow things down sometimes. We did manage to make friends with a
    few other couples closer to our age level and found ourselves
    socializing more with the smaller group during the non-tour hours.
    If your tour is the bar mitzvah tour, you may have more in common
    with the other folks. BTW, mazel tov!
