796.0. "DECville'90-Roch Hashana" by BONNET::MARCIANO () Wed Oct 11 1989 09:46

    Shalom,

As for DECworld 88 in Cannes, DECville is scheduled for September
10-21st 1990 in Cannes and Roch Hashana is September 20/21st.

We'll have the same problem as for DECworld and again some of us
will have to be away from the family during the holy days.

    Stay tuned

I'd love to go back to Cannes, but after last year I swore that i
wouldn't be away from home during the chagim again.

Can anybody bring this to Roger Haisman's attention?

Subject: ANNOUNCED DECWORLD DATES

Thank you for your note regarding the conflict of DECworld dates
and the Jewish Holy Days.
   .
   .
   .
Please accept my apologies for our lack of sensitivity to the <
dates and my assurances that we have (already) insured that <
future DECworld's will not have a schedule conflict with the high <
holy dates. <

THIS IS A JOINT MESSAGE FROM BRUNO D'AVANZO AND MICHAEL EWING
*************************************************************

Many people have raised the subject of DecWorld '88 coinciding with
the Jewish High Holidays of Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur.

We are aware of this situation, which we deeply regret, but
unfortunately there was no alternative,.
                                       .
                                       .
We would express the regret of the Corporation that this problem has <
occurred this year, and can advise you that steps have been taken to <
ensure future DecWorld dates will not create a similar schedule <
problem. <

Best regards,

Well that memo came from a person who no longer works for DEC (:-).
Seriously we should work up another or at least "massage" this memo to
address it to DECville '90. I'll do a draft if no one else objects.

    Shalom Alechem to you all

September is the only month that the facilities in Cannes are available
to us. August is vacation time and October is booked years in advance.
DECUS and DECville 90 is a three week period, so no matter how we
arrange the dates I am afraid that the dates of Rosh Hashana are
impacted. The good news is that this year we have been able to plan
the event in such a way as to impact only the last two days. We
fully understand the importance of the 20th and 21st to our Jewish
colleagues and wouldn't expect them to stay away from their families
on the last two days of DECville.

Please be aware that we fully respect your family commitments during
Roch Hashana and will ensure that those of you who require to return
home before the end of DECville will be able to do so.

    Shalom
    David Cooper
796.5Where are the services?MAVIN::STEARMANA Visualization in Time save nineThu Aug 23 1990 20:2418
Well, I am going to DECville for the 2 weeks.

I have arranged to have Wed afternoon and all day Thursday off, so I can attend
Rosh Hashana services. I will be staying at Opio and will not have a car.

Now I need to find a synogogue for services.

Is anyone else going to be in Cannes for the holiday? Can we be family for
the occasion :-)

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to best handle this situation.

Thanks for your help,
_Susan

PS. I am taking the days between end of DECville and Yom Kippur as
vacation in France. I plan to fly back to Boston on Friday, hopefully
arriving in time to attend Kol Nidre that night! How's that for torture :-)

Susan, there is both a Sepahrdic (mostly N. African) synagogue and an
Ashkenazic synagogue in Cannes. I attended the former and enjoyed it,
although I was forced to sit on a tree branch during Kol Nidre (no
room, etc.). People who attended the Ashkenazic synagogue said that
the people were stiff and unfriendly. By the way go to the Hotel
Acapulco, it is owned by Hasidim (Lubovich I think), very nice people.
