777.1 | Try the Encyclopedia Judaica..... | TAVENG::CHAIM | Semper ubi Sub ubi ..... | Thu Sep 21 1989 05:03 | 11 |
| The undisputed "guru" of Kabalah (from an acedemic standpoint!) was Gershon
Shalom (I believe that one of his students, Rivka Shatz, has sort of taken his
place after his death -- but I'm not certain of this fact). He authored several
books, though I don't know the names. He also wrote the quite lengthy section
on Kabalah in the Encyclopedia Judaica (English), and I'm certain that the
article itself would be enlightening as well as the bibliography related to it.
Cb.
BTW: Isn't it an interesting coincidence that the number of this note is "777"
(the number "7" has quite amount of Kabalistic significance)?

777.2 | A Refreshing View of Kaballah | SAGE::PERLMAN | Eli B. Perlman | Thu Sep 21 1989 08:31 | 11 |
| You might try "THE WAY OF SPLENDOR, Jewish Mysticism and Modern
Psychology" by Edward Hoffman. It takes a very refreshing view
on the subject which is very understandable. Unfortunately, most
modern commentaries are jaded to the point that Kabbalah was derived
from a historical need. This book takes a different bent and is
makes for enjoyable and mind challenging reading.

Eli

Didn't "the other" Rabbi Kushner right a
book about Kabbalah?

777.4 | Are you over 29? | BAGELS::SREBNICK | Bad pblm now? Wait 'til we solve it! | Fri Sep 22 1989 17:48 | 9 |
| I hope you're over 40.
Kabbalists believe that you should not begin study of Kabbalah until you've
reached the age of 40. I remember being told this in Hebrew school, but no one
told me why until much, much later. Even that was a vague answer.
I always thought that if you study Kabbalah when you're under 40 you'll come
down with "kabbalitic psychosis" and have to undergo intense psychiatric
treatment until you reach 40, when everything will become clear.

Perhaps we could create another 772 replies, and really wreak havoc in the
sefirot!

777.6 | What is it? | NYTP07::LAM | Q Ktl | Thu Jan 02 1992 19:32 | 2 |
| What is Kabbalah? I've heard the term many times but don't know what
it is. I am not Jewish so there's a lot I don't know about Jews.

777.7 | We're all in this together | DECSIM::HAMAN::GROSS | The bug stops here | Fri Jan 03 1992 00:11 | 12 |
| Kabbalah is Jewish mysticism. The "Zohar" is the original book on the
subject. Although the book itself claims to be ancient, scholars agree
that it was written in Europe in the 14th century (if my memory hasn't
failed me again). At the time of the Reformation, Europeans developed
a strong interest in the Hebrew language not to read Torah nor Talmud,
but to read Zohar.
Among Jews, one is not supposed to study Kabbalah until one is mature
in the study of Talmud. Since most of us never get that far (myself
included), we don't really know what Kabbalah is any more than you do.

777.8 | THE WAY OF SPLENDOR | MRKTNG::PERLMAN | Eli B. Perlman | Fri Jan 03 1992 16:07 | 3 |
| Read the book, _The_Way_of_Splendor_. It is a wonderful book, easy to
read, and explains Jewish mysticism better than most, especially for
the lay person.

Could you please provide more details of this book.
The author, publisher, ISBN and approximate price would make it
easier to order this book in Europe.
Thanks,
Delia
