770.1 | JEWISH ORIENTED DAYCARE?? | JAIMES::FOX | | Tue Sep 12 1989 15:37 | 20 |
| Deb:
I HAVe had similar concerns; my two children have been in non-Jewish
family day care, and we had (in the past) 2 non-Jewish nannies.
I was not comfortable. Even now, in the supposedly non-sectarian
daycare center where the kids are (they're 3 and 5), a BIG fuss
is made over Christmas and an attempt made to make a somewhat
comparable fuss over Chanukah (obviously no know that Chanukah and
XMAS are not comparable in scope in within their respective religions).
I've tried to do a bit of ad hoc educating but some of what I've
talked about seems so EXOTIC (e.g. Shavuot, keeping Shabbat, 8 days
of Sukkot) even to the Jewish teeachers!!
So...what is my point. We're thinking of day school for the kids,
in the Boston area where we live.
Regarding your situation, I'd mention to the R & R counselor you
wqork with that you're looking for a Jewish family day care home
(if you haven't already done this). I'm not sure there are many
Jewish families doing daycare in your area..but it's worth a try.

I know this is not much, but it is a pointer. Last
Sat. I remember seeing something on the office window
at Temple Israel in Natick. I am not sure of any
details but it was about day care. Maybe it
is worth giving the synogogue a call?
Good luck,
Amy

770.3 | Call ALL local synagogues | USEM::ROSENZWEIG | | Fri Sep 15 1989 18:01 | 7 |
| Call all the synagogues in the area. Look in the phone book....
and call the Chabad center in Boston...there is a very large
orthodox network on this. The reform and conservative synagogues
should also know of something to answer your needs.
Good luck.

| I don't know what's available in southern N.H., but I do know that
the CJP and related social service agencies in the Boston area are
trying to stimulate Jewish-oriented services for preschool children, to
the tune of some serious startup money to get Jewish nursery schools
started. I'm not aware of whether they're actively working on daycare
centers yet, but once you get into the subject (of what to do about
preschoolers) it's hard to avoid daycare.
If your local federation (again, I don't really know what passes
for a CJP equivalent in N.H.) isn't aware of this, or isn't working on
it, you might give CJP (617-524-8080) or the Jewish Family and
Children's Service (617-227-6641) a call. They might be aware of
something.
Certainly, Jewish adults in the childbearing years are in the same
boat as the general population, needing more and better child care,
with more extended hours, as families increasingly become dual-income.
I applaud the desire to include some Jewish component in this. Every
little bit helps.
