769.0. "names" by ERLANG::ARTSY () Fri Sep 08 1989 19:19

    Does anyone out there have a book of Hebrew/Jewish names to lend or to
    recommend? We expect our baby by the end of the month, and unlike with our
    other 2 children, we cannot agree on a name that we both like and is
    significant to us.

    It would help if you could give a list of names that you two already
    have discarded.

    You might want to call any of the Temples in your area. There are
    some good books around, although I can't recommend to you, Temple
    librarians could.

    The author/editor is Alfred Kolatch, who has published several
    variations on the one mentioned. Look in your local library or
    bookstore.

    I have a book that has a list of Hebew names, both for boys and
    girls. If you'd like I'll copy that section out of the book and
    send it to you. Let me know.

769.8It's a boy!ERLANG::ARTSYThu Sep 14 1989 02:1832
    Thanx to all that offerred help. Well, not everything in life can be
    planned, and babies may have their own schedule. Our new son caught us by
    surprise when he decided to "get born" (actively indeed) last early A.M,
    Wednesday 13th, instead of Erev Rosh Hashana (or later, as the Dr. promised)

    The birth was relatively easy and fast, and natural. The babyboy joins
    big brother Avishay Anatole (9) and little sister Elinor Ayelet (5). All
    are exhausted but thrilled. The baby is cute, active, and feels very well.

    We chose (tentatively, thus far) for first name Shanee (Shane in English),
    and middle names Amots (Amos in English) and Adam. Each name is very
    special to us. Shanee has 5 special reasons to be chosen (and another
    3 less important reasons), the middle names have also a few reasons each.
    If you have a few minutes to kill, dare to ask me for the reasons
    (but off line, pls). If you desire to kill another half-an-hour, ask why
    Avishay, Elinor, etc.

    There are only two things that bother us: My cousin tells me that Shanee
    (or Shani) has become recently VERY popular in Israel, and especially (or
    only?) among girls. Is it a TOO popular name (remember "all the Jennys
    stand up!" and nobody remains sitting)? Is it a unisex, masculine, or
    feminine name? If you have definitive knowledge, pls reply directly by
    e-mail {ERLANG,FOCS1,DSMAIL,DSAD}::ARTSY, phone (DTN 226-7324,
    H:603/881-7499 or 881-4951), or reply to this note, but ASAP -- the Brith

    Thanx in advance,

    Shaike

    I like Shane. When pronounced the "American way" it almost sounds
    like the Yiddish word for "Beautiful".

    "Schejn" (apologies for any US customed misspellings).

    Mazeltov! That's terrific.....glad to hear everything went well
    for you.

    My oldest daughter's name is Rebecca. We were originally going to
    spell it "Rebekah" but we encountered such opposition that we decided
    to spell it "Rebecca". However, when our youngest daughter arrived,
    we named her "Abigail" which while not super well-received didn't
    get certain people in our family as cranked up as "Rebekah".

    Again, congratulations....

769.12What's Joshua for a girl?ABACUS::RADWINI think, fer sureTue Jul 03 1990 17:1013
    I would appreciate help with jewish/hebrew names for a girl that
    begin with "J."

    Am particularly interested in female equivalents of Joshua.

    Thanks,
