753.0. "Info needed for Yiddish Translation" by PROXY::SWOTINSKY () Mon Aug 07 1989 09:44

    I am looking for someone who can translate a manuscript from Yiddish
    to English. When my Grandmother came over from the "old country" she
    kept a diary of her travels. This diary contains about 100 pages
    written on small notebook paper. From what I can tell, the diary is in
    pretty good condition. We have had a couple of pages translated in the
    past, but no one seems to want to do the whole thing. I realize that the
    handwriting or dialect might be difficult, but I can't imagine this being
    any worse than other translations.

    Any ideas where I can go to have this done??

    Thanks,
    Amy

    Is there a branch of the "Workmen's Circle" near you. There may be a
    resource there.

    Amy,

    I can't offer any specific names, only a few suggestions.

    How about a local shul or Jewish Home for the Aged. They might know
    of a retired person or elderly shut-in who might be interested in
    helping you translate the diary.

    Many of the local JCCs and universities (Brandeis?, Harvard?) offer
    classes in Yiddish, you might try to contact one of the teachers.
    The Cambridge Center for Adult Education once offered a Yiddish
    class also.

    Here's an off-the-wall suggestion.... Perhaps you know what city
    your grandmother came from. Many of the immigrants from the same
    city formed societies. Perhaps a society exists for the city your
    grandmother came from. They might have a special interest in
    translating a diary of "one of their own".

753.3Try BrandeisCLYPPR::WASSERMANDeb Wasserman, DTN 264-1863Mon Aug 07 1989 11:034
    Brandeis used to have an instructor in the Yiddish department, Mr.
    Rothenberg, who was a native Yiddish speaker. I don't know if he's
    still there, but the Brandeis 'NEJS' (Near Eastern and Judaic Studies)
    Dept. seems like a good bet to me.
753.4yiddish library in AmherstUSEM::ROSENZWEIGMon Aug 07 1989 11:4312
    I don't know the address or the exact title, but its founder recently
    got a MacCarther award. ....there is a Yiddish library in Amherst,
    MA dedicated to preserving all yiddish publications. Ask any Hebrew,
    Yiddish department, shul, etc about this and they may give you more
    accurate information. Here's a long shot, call Temple Beth El in
    Sudbury MA at 508-443-9622 and ask if someone in the congregation
    knows this. ...or write c/o Hudson Rd, Sudbury MA 01776

    or perhaps a local library can find this library listed somewhere
    in a list of libraries.

    Of course, the National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, MA. They would
    _certainly_ be of some help!

    Professor and provost Sol Gittleman (sp?) at Tufts University, Medford
    MA, teaches a popular course on Yiddish. You might give him a call for
    pointers to some local graduates.
