723.0. "Shabataton" by TSE::POLIKOFF (North Central Massachusetts) Thu Jun 22 1989 17:14
I am planning to hold a Shabataton in late Winter of 1990 for the
Boy Scouts of Central and Eastern Massachusetts. You are probably
asking your self, "What is a Shabataton"? A few months ago there was
a Boy Scout Catholic Retreat called "In search of the Holy Grail".
The Scouts camped out at Camp Wanocksett in Jafrey New Hampshire,
dressed in Knights armor and had a lot of fun. On the more serious
side there was a Bishop at the weekend retreat who gave the Scouts
guidance, some religious training and a Sunday mass.
A Shabataton is a similar retreat for Jewish Scouts. Instead of
searching for the Holy Grail, I was considering a theme of "Raiders of
the Lost Arc" and instead of a Bishop we would obviously have a Rabbi
although Eagle Scout Steven Spielberg was my first choice. If this
gets enough interest I will contact Steve since he is going to be at
the 1989 National Camporee teaching a merit badge course on
cinematography.
Now back to the Shabataton. I need to get the word out to all
the councils in the square from Boston to Worcester to Fitchberg to
Lowell and back to Boston. I also need a list of all the Synagogues
in this area so that they can put the announcement in their monthly
newsletters.
The Shabataton will run from Friday to Sunday since most of the
Scouts attending will not ride during the Sabbath. It will probably
be held at Camp Grossman in Dedham because that is about the most
centrally located camp in the area and it is just off route 128. Next
year's Hebrew calendar shows Passover starting on April 10th and the
Isaac Trail Camporee will occur during that same week so the
Shabataton can be held during any of the following weekends: the
weekend of April 6, 20, 27 or May 4, 11, or 18. Since May 28 is
Memorial Day and a lot of Scouts take part in Memorial day events on
that weekend I am deleting this weekend from the available dates.
I welcome all suggestions and if you want to contact me directly
rather then through this note I can be reached at

I also welcome all the assistance I can get especially from the
councils and districts outside of mine which is the Nashua Valley
Council, Metacomet District in Lancaster Massachusetts.
Thank you for your support,

| I know some Cub Scouts that might be interested. Are they too young for your
planned activities?

| Send a notice to Congregation Beth Elohim, Acton. There is a
scout group associated with the temple but I don't remember the
name in charge.

Cub Scouts are not allowed to do overnight camping without a parent.
This Shabataton is for Boy Scouts only.
