721.0. "Mission to Israel - Nov 1-16, 1989" by SAFETY::SEGAL (Len Segal, MLO6-1/U30, 223-7687) Thu Jun 22 1989 00:30

I have searched this Conference (and EASYNOTES.LIS) and find no
reference to any other Conferences on Israel, etc. Are there any
such other Conferences that would cover topics of interest to a
tourist (who can't read {as in comprehend} or understand Hebrew)?

I am planning a vacation/tour of Israel in November with the Shomrim
Society (Jewish Police organization) for 16 days and would like to
gain some additional info about Israel. BTW: If anyone is
interested, the trip is NOT restricted to Shomrim members (and
SO's) only. [The cost is $1699/adult, including airfare, hotels,
meals, 8 days of sightseeing including entrance fees, airport and
     hotel taxes.]

If anyone in Tel Aviv would be willing to check something out with
Israeli Customs at Ben Gurion Int'l Airport, I would greatly
appreciate it. [Please contact me via MAIL, SAFETY::SEGAL] I am not
satisfied with the answer I got from the Israeli Consulate in
Boston, since it contradicts an Israeli Customs brochure that they
     sent me!!

The trip includes Tel Aviv, Jaffa, Haifa, Jerusalem, and Masada.
The tour also is a mission to dedicate a wing at the Bnai Zion
Medical Center in Haifa. [When the trip was described, a comment
was noted that some part of the trip qualifies as tax-deductible due
to the mission to dedicate the hospital. I don't know enough about
this mission to pass any personal judgment, I was out of the room
     when the trip was discussed.]

    Len,
Your trip is very similar to one I was one two years ago. You
did not elaborate as to what you were concerned about with customs,
thus I can only speculate on what your concerns might be. The most
common one I recall was bringing in of video cameras, and having
to post a bond of $1000 dollars to insure you dont sell it, or any
other more or less "hi-Tech" device.

I found their customs folks reasonable but quite thorough. Dont
try to fast talk anyone would be good advice. Smooth passage can
be enhanced by having the tour guide meet you as soon as you go
to baggage pick up, as there is a final checkpoint after getting
    your baggage.

As far as the country is concerned, Haifa is beautiful, but it's
tough to walk, as there are many hills. Eliat at the southern
tip of Israel is interesting and warm. The King Solomon Hotel
is terrific. Tel Aviv is something to experience on a Friday
night, especially on the main thorough fare.

Jerusalem is my fondest memory, especially the out door cafes
    on Ben-Yehuda street.

    regards,
              Ron Cohen
