Dear Sir:
I would like to call your attention to and request your
assistance in the removal of a very disturbing sight, a
swastika and the letters KKK. If I have addressed this to the
wrong office, would you please refer me to the proper
authorities that would handle such matters.
While visiting my aunt in Wilmington, Delaware recently and
enjoying the scenery at Brandywine Park, I saw the eyesore, a
huge swastika and the letters KKK located in a very
conspicuous and open area. It's painted on the cement wall of
the bridge that looks out to the waterfall, near the rose
garden, not too far from the zoo.
I wish it were as easy as applying paint remover to get rid of
the sick mentality and hatred behind such a gesture. Your
help in this matter would be very much appreciated.
Sincerely,
Bernice Julius

Dear Ms. Julius:
Thank you for calling to our attention the anti-Semitic graffiti
in Brandywine Park in Wilmington, Delaware. We enlisted the aid
of the Jewish Federation of Delaware to contact the Department
of Transportation, who agreed immediately to have all graffiti removed
from the bridge where you saw the swastika and the letters "KKK".
I am assured that all the graffiti found on the bridge will be removed
by no later than Friday, August 4, 1989 by means of sand-blasting.
Once again, allow me to thank you for bringing this to our attention.
People such as yourself who are willing to take the time to write
are the active eyes and ears of the ADL. Without you, we would
be that much less effective in fighting anti-Semitism and hatred
in all its forms.
Sincerely,
Fred David Levine
Associate Director

Yesterday at City Point, MA I saw a swastika painted on an MDC barrel
directly opposite the entrance to the walkway that leads to the
point. Believe me I'm not out looking for it, it just makes me
sick when I see it. I'll be writing another letter.
Thank you,
Bernice

| Actually, using the term "Swastika" is an abuse. While the Swastika
is a symbol of life for the Hindus, the "Hakenkreuz" is... well,
we know.
By the way, you start seeing them more often in Europe, as well.
Sadly yours,
Chris
