687.0. "JCC's & Singles Groups" by AISG::CAMHI () Tue Apr 25 1989 17:51

    Hi,

    I'm relatively new to the Boston area and I'd like to know a little
    bit more about the JCC's and/or other young/singles groups in the
    area.

    Which have active memberships of, say, people in their 20's (I'm
    22)?

    What sort of facilities do the JCC's have?

    Are there any sports leagues?

    What are the membership procedures/costs?

    etc.

    Thanks in advance for any help.

687.1Jewish Singles Groups in the Boston AreaCRUISE::SPEARLFri Apr 28 1989 10:1918
    Keith,

    There is an organization called "Centerpoint". It is at 1120 Beacon
    Street in Brookline. You can call them for information at 566-5946.
    This organization was formerly know as the Jewish Young Adult Center.
    They have about 1000 members from ages 22 - 35. They sponsor social,
    educational, sports and other programs. It is a very good place
    to meet single people. If you call them they will send you a calander
    of events.

    The JCC in Newton also has a single program. They sponsor dances
    and other activities. They would give you more information if you
    called.

    I hope this helps.

    Keith,

    There's one more group in the triad -- CJP's Young Professionals
    group. They are also in the process of changing their name, but
    if you call CJP they'd be happy to direct your call to the right
    people (Combined Jewish Philanthropies).

    I think that the Young Israel of Brookline singles group is also quite
    active. They sponsor all kinds of different events--shabbatonim,
    volleyball games, ice skating parties, concerts, etc. Young Israel is
    an orthodox shul but the group gets people from different religious
    backgrounds. Herbie Weinberg of Brookline (he's listed in the
    phonebook) is the one to contact.

	Also, the Society for Young Jewish Professionals runs a few parties
	each month. Next one is Wednesday, May 14 after work at Zanzibar.
	Call (617) 859-0700 for event info - membership (if you want to join
	- it gets you 1/2 price admission, among other things) is $60/year.

687.6Israeli Folk DancingACESMK::MALMBERGThu May 25 1989 10:217
    Israeli Folk Dancing at MIT every Wednesday evening is an informal
    mixer, i.e., it's just a good way to meet people, both single and
    married. I am not particularly graceful, but I enjoyed it alot
    anyway. Because it is not a singles organization, I found it more
    relaxing than some of the other functions.

687.7Worcester area singles activities?...LEDDEV::KAGENMike Kagen, 223-3010, LEDE, MaynardFri May 26 1989 11:4911
    Hi,

    I was reading all the places in this note and it occured to me that
    all of these places are in Boston (only fair that's what the base
    note asked for). Anyone know of any jewish young adault
    clubs/activities for single jews in the Worcester area. Boston
    is a little far most of the time but I might look into those clubs
    anyways.

    Thanks,
    Mike
687.8Oneg ShabbatULTRA::WITTENBERGSecure Systems for Insecure PeopleFri May 26 1989 12:3010
    There is a group called Shabbat Shalom Boston which has Oneg
    Shabbats about once a month at different synagougues in the Boston
    area (as far away from Boston as Marblehead and Marlborough). I
    don't have the schedule anymore, but there is a pointer to it
    somwhere in this file, and I assume that Centerpoint (see .1)
    could give you a number for them.

    I met my girlfriend there, so I recommend it.

    re .7
    Funny you should ask about Worcester. I recently got a flyer from
    JeWS, Jewish Worcester Singles. I haven't been to any of their events
    yet but from the flyer:

    Singles Discussion Group meets alternate Wednesdays, 7:30 in the
    library at Temple Emanuel. There was supposed to be a meeting this
    past Wednesday (May 31).

    Most of the events listed have already passed by but there is a
    barbeque scheduled for Sunday, June 11.

    Call 508-754-2330 for more info.

687.10More information about JWS please...LEDDEV::KAGENMike Kagen, 223-3010, LEDE, MaynardMon Jun 05 1989 12:116
    Thanks for the pointer Sam. I called that number and it's a recording
    of upcoming events. Is there a number you can call to talk to someone
    about what the group is like/how you join? (I hate recordings :-) )

    Thanks,
    Mike
687.11Try Temple EmanuelVINO::WEINERSamTue Jun 06 1989 00:474

    They also give the number for Temple Emanuel, 755-1257 and mention
    Rabbi Garfunkel.

687.12JCC, Newton, MASAFETY::JACOBSFri Jul 21 1989 14:2220

    Back to the Boston area, I don't think anyone mentioned the
    Leventhal-Sidman Jewish Community Center in Newton (aka the JCC).
    Unfortunately, the athletic center part of it (tennis, squash,
    jogging track, exercise machines, aerobics classes, volleyball,
    pool, etc) has a waiting list longer than most New York
    rent-controlled apartments'. However, the JCC also sponsors many
    activities that are not members-restricted. There are social dances,
    brunches and lectures for singles groups of 3 different age categories,
    and also a single parents' group. They also run all sorts of classes,
    and have artisan-type facilities (ie: jewelery making setup, potters
    wheels, etc.), an art gallery, occasional Jewish/Yiddish theatre....
    Gosh, sounds like a great place!

    There's also a Brookline 'annex' of the JCC called the BBN, which
    holds co-ed volleyball and basketball games, which I think are open
    to non-members.

687.13Western MA/Amherst area??SAFETY::JACOBSFri Jul 21 1989 14:2510

    OK, looks like the Boston and Worcester areas have been covered...

    Does anyone have any info on Jewish singles activities in the Amherst,
    MA area? A close friend just moved out there to attend grad school
    at U Mass, and she'd love to plug into the Jewish community there.
    Any tips would be appreciated.

687.14find the UMASS Hillel office!CARTUN::FRYDMANwherever you go...you're thereFri Jul 21 1989 15:435
    Have the friend walk into the Hillel office. That's what I did when I
    went to UMASS as a Grad Student. They'll be more than happy to
    introduce your friend to "jewish life" in the five-college area.

Inknow that there is a Jewish Singles group in Springfield, just a bit south
of Am-erst (no H) that joins forces (combined activities) with the Hartford
(with an H) Connecticut group.

Or you can probably get more information at the Springfield, Holyoke, and/or
Northampton JCCs.
