Conference taveng::bagels

Every so often, the leaders of major Jewish organizations (whose numbers
approach that of the total Jewish population) gather together and loudly
proclaim thir whole-hearted support of the State of Israel (though they
generally avoid any reference to the politicians who happen to be in power
at the moment).  Why they bother to make such proclamations is unknown,
since this support already is assumed by anyone who cares about such things.
These gatherings would seem to be the ideal target for a satire, and now
there is one.

Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir called a conference of International Jewish
Solidarity, to which he invited leaders (see above) from all over the world.
(Jewish Solidarity is something of an oxymoron; possibly it is meant to
refer to a situation in which for every 2 Jews there are only 2 opinions,
rather than the usual 3.)  Just to show exactly he meant, Shamir (who has
rarely, if ever, been accused of showing any sign of a sense of humor)
scheduled the conference to coincide with Purim.

Well, the conference opened on Erev Purim, 5749.  Shamir was there, along
with Finance Minister and former-and-wishes-that-he-could-be-again-but-
doesn't-stand-a-snowball's-chance-in-hell Prime Minister Shimon Peres.
(Peres is another one with no sense of humor.  Where do they find these
people?)

I'm not sure what this conference is going to accomplish, but rumor has
it that the participants may loudly proclaim their whole-hearted support
of the State of Israel.  Check your newspapers for details as this dramatic
event unfolds.
