                      Soviet Resettlement Crisis Looming
         
         At a recent meeting of the Atlantic Division of USA in 
         Boston, the oncoming crisis of Soviet Jewish resettlement was 
         fully revealed.
         
         The unprecedented numbers of Jews coming out of the Soviet 
         Union - at least 35,000 are expected this year - poses both a 
         blessing and a challenge for the American Jewish community.
         
         Because of cutbacks in US government subsidies for refugee 
         settlement, the cost of settling 35,000 Soviet Jews will be 
         at least $100 M, or $3,000 per Soviet Jew.
         
         "In terms of financial commitment, the cost of Soviet 
         Resettlement will be one of the greatest challenges in 
         American Jewish philanthropic history," explained
         Carl Chudnofsky, President of the MetroWest Jewish 
         Federation.
         
         "Each community will be expected to do everything it can to 
         bring forth our brothers and sisters from Russia, and 
         incorporate them into the sanctuary that we, ourselves, have 
         found in the United States."
         
         The Mary Travers lecture/concert on March 12 will be the 
         first effort of the MetroWest Jewish Federation to meet the 
         challenge ahead.

	OK, does anyone know where I'd start? I've been following the rise in emigration, and feel guilty for not helping out my brethen I would volunteer to do something for a couple of hours a week, but don't know where to turn. Anyone knows who coordinates the resettlement in Greater Boston are? DG

	Re:-1 As a long time follower of Peter, Paul and Mary, I have never heard one word of Mary Travers EVER supporting anything todo with the PLO. She has been a staunch supporter of the Refusnicks, meeting with them in Russia and carrying their message to those in the US who will listen. Her song "Light one Candle" is dedicated to the Refusnicks and her support has been vocal and unwavering. If you have proof of your acqusation I would appreciate it and would greatly shocked if true. Could you be thinking of Vanessa Redgrave (sister of Lynn of Weight Watcher fame) who is an avowed PLO supporter? WS

I don't know anything about Mary Travers' postion on refuseniks or the PLO, but when I saw PP&M in concert here in Israel about three years ago, they sang "Light one Candle" with an introduction that this was a song they wrote especially for this trip and it's about the situation here (I think they meant Lebanon, not the West Bank then -- it's hard to keep track of which crisis we are going through when...)

	At the pre-opening to first DECworld, actually DECtown PP&M entertained the Digital employees. This was just after they had come back together. Mary had recently come back from Russia and went on at some length about the Refusnicks and sang "Light One Candle" which she said was her expression that the refusnicks could be free. She went on to say that the song idea came to her after the lighting of a Chanuka Menorah at the home of a Refusnick.
