630.0. "Evening on Adoption/Infertility and the Jewish Community" by VAXWRK::ZAITCHIK (VAXworkers of the World Unite!) Wed Jan 25 1989 20:34

Just thought I would announce an event that might be of interest to
Bagelites in the greater Boston area...

On 15 March the Jewish Community Center in Newton will host a discussion
featuring Rabbi Michael Gold, author of a wonderful book (IMHO),
"And Hanna Wept: Infertility, Adoption, and the Jewish Couple". It is at
7.30 pm. I don't know anything about the cost (if any) of admission.

As someone who has had to deal with the above-mentioned issues and has found
Jewish sources and resources sadly lacking, I know how significant Rabbi
Gold's work in this area is. From his book he strikes me also as a real
mensch!

ps/ I will add a reply to this note when I get more details.

Rabbi Gold shared his personal experiences with us, both as someone
who had undergone infertility treatment as well as adopted 2 children,
and also as an "adoption activist" in the Jewish community. His main
points were that (hmm, let me see if I remember...)
	1. there are many Biblical sources for adoption in the informal sense
	2. infertility nixes one of the purposes of marriage (procreation)
but not the other (actually the primary one), viz. companioniship
	3. Jews have a higher than normal infertility rate
	4. Jewish welfare organizations are not active enough in helping
Jewish couples ACTIVELY seek out adoption possibilities, e.g.
	   identified adoptions
	5. In general many states have arcane laws that, e.g., may prohibit
couples from advertising for birth mothers interested in an
"adoption alternative" to abortion, while at the same time
they place no restrictions whatsoever on advertising abortion
	   services.
It was not so much WHAT he said as the mere fact that people with common
"tsarot" had a chance to share a bit. (Not just share the tsarot but also
the JOY of overcoming many of those tsarot and ending up with wonderful
kids.)
Oh yes, we also were introduced to an organization of Jewish adoptive
families, "Stars of David". I believe they are mostly couples who have
done international adoptions and are dealing with the issues of "How do
I raise my (e.g.) Korean child as a Jew who is also in touch with his/her
Korean roots?" Interesting!

I know this is an old note, and I was not able to go to the event
described here, but I have recently read Rabbi Gold's book. For any of
you out there playing the discouraging infertility game, this guy has been
there and the book is very worth reading. He is not only sensitive to the
issues as a husband/parent, but also as an observant Jew who presents
the trials/tests/procedures against a backdrop of Biblical and Halachic
references and considerations.
