619.0. "What's available for Hebrew word processing today?" by DECSIM::GROSS (Wanted: inane comment to fill this slot) Thu Jan 12 1989 10:13

My synagogue is looking for mixed English/Hebrew text-preparation software. We
use Microsoft Word on an (oh horror!) IBM compatible machine with a laser
printer for English text. Can anyone supply pointers?

I know the subject of Hebrew fonts is discussed elsewhere in Bagels. However,
the PC software world changes so fast that I thought it would be best to
start a new topic.

Thanks,
Dave

Contact the Local Engineering Group in DEC/Israel (most of them are on
TAVENG::). If not for DEC products, they are certainly aware of MS-DOS
word/text processors that 'tick' both in English and Hebrew.

As for the printers, I'm sure they can give you some valuable tips,
    there, as well.

    Pointingly yours,

They make add-ons for several word processors that can produce Russian,
Hebrew, Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil, Thai, Korean,
Viet, or IPA fonts. (Don't ask me what they are, I'm just reading
    from an ad.).

These are MS-DOS based tools. I inquired about how Hebrew works
for WordPerfect. You can get true right to left text, but you don't
get vowels. Also, it's recommended for inserting a few Hebrew words
    into a mostly English document.

He said that there was a much better add on for the desktop publishers
    that could give you vowels.

When I called, this guy was very helpful. He may also sell a foreign
language word processor specially made for right to left languages.
