604.0. "Jewish population at US College" by AIMHI::COHEN (Alan @MK01 264-7970 ISM) Fri Dec 16 1988 13:29

[Jewish Population at US Colleges?]
Does anyone know if there is a book or other reference available
that shows the Jewish student populations at US Colleges?

    Thanks,
    Alan Cohen

    Alan,

Although there are colleges in the US that "cater" to the Jewish
population, I think that it is illegal (against civil rights) to
state the religious affiliations in colleges that are not primarly
    religious institutions.

You know that clause in the Constitution "no matter what race, creed,
    or color..."

Alan,
You might just check to see which colleges have a Hillel House. If
there is no Hillel House at a college then the chances are that there
is not a sizeable Jewish population at that college.
Wouldn't some catalogue of US colleges have information like that, even
if it doesn't have figures on the number of Jews? Such a catalogue exists
since I remember seeing one in the US Information office in Israel...
but I don't remember the name of the catalogue.

I didn't see such information in the large compendium of colleges,
but most catalogs from the individual institutions list such
    organizations.

There is a list from 1982 in a Jewish Almanac I have giving total
enrollment, estimated Jewish enrollment, Judaica courses, and
availability of kosher food. It is too much to type it all in but
if you list some specific colleges, I will enter the information
for them. A list of conditions (location, size of Jewish pop, etc.)
that narrows the number of colleges to a reasonable amount of typing
    would also be accepted.

There is also a book, published about ten years ago (and perhaps
updated since then?) specifically devoted to the topic. I believe that
it is available through the National B'nai Brith Hillel Foundation, but
I'm not certain. I'll see if I can find it.

I just read about a catalogue in the Journal. Here's th info:

B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation's annual Jewish Life on Campus: A
Directory of B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundations and other Jewish Campus
    Agencies.

I have the current copy of "THE 1987-1988 JEWISH ALMANAC" in
front of me. It list about 16 pages of Colleges with the 1987 student/jewish
populations, Judaica courses, & where Kosher food is available.
It is a bit too much to type in but I'll try to get a hold of
the page reader and let the computer do the typing. In the mean
time if anyone "needs" an unauthorized copy send me a mail message.

Thanks to all of you who responded to the search for reliable
demographics. I've got some good leads to follow.
