Hmmm. At least we're not being overwhelmed by excessive
torrents of biographical information about the
late Mr. Amiram Nir.
Rumor has it that Nir was (at one time at least) an
official of the Israeli government. Was he, as of
yesterday? What was his specific title or office?
Or, did he have more than one?

597.3 | Washington Post article about Nir ? | HYDRA::MCALLEN | | Thu Dec 15 1988 13:10 | 12 |
| Has anyone read the article about Mr. Amiram Nir (and
his death) in the Washington Post (of Sunday, Dec 4th)
written by Bob Woodward? Apparently Woodward earlier
interviewed Mr. Nir for an article for deferred release, and
decided to "release it" for publication 1 1/2 weeks ago.
I haven't seen it but would like to hear about it.
Has the Israeli press anything to say about Mr. Amiram Nir
or his plane crash in a remote part of Mexico? Was Mr. Nir
vacationing in Mexico?
thank you

| HERE IT IS:
AMIRAM NIR, Irangate figure, dies.
Jerusalem Post (International Edition)
Amiram Nir, a former adviser on counter-terrorism to Prime Ministers Shimon
Peres and Yitzhak Shamir,. died last week in a light plane crash in Mexico.
The circumstances of the accident were not known.
Foreign Ministry sources in Jerusalem confirmed that an Israeli identity card
bearing Nir's identity number was found at the scene of the crash, some 400
kilometers from Mexico City. He was in Mexico on private business.
Nir, 38, became well-known during the Irangate arms scandal in which he played
a major role as the initial go-between between the U.S. administration and
Iranian figures. He left his post as adviser to Shamir in April. His remaining
in the post after the rotation of the premiership was said to be a means of
shielding him from American investigators of the Contra affair.
He was lauded by U.S. security adviser Oliver North as playing a key role in
the capture of the Achille Lauro kidnapers in 1985. North also praised Nir's
courage in going to Teheran.
Prior to his being taken on by Peres as an adviser, he was military
correspondent for Israeli Television and served as a researcher on military and
strategic affairs at the Jaffee Institute in Tel Aviv.
Recently, Nir spent much of his time in London, where he was involved in
private business.
Nir is survived by his wife Judy, daughter of "Yediot Aharonot" proprietor
Noah Moses, and two young sons.

597.6 | avocado business of Mr. Nir ? | HYDRA::MCALLEN | | Tue Jan 03 1989 16:38 | 14 |

Re: Nir's private business, on which he reportedly spent
much time in London, and which might have been the purpose
of his trip to Mexico.....
Is it accurate to say that Mr. Nir was involved in avocado
commerce, or cultivation? This has been suggested
elsewhere, and possibly the remote area of Mexico
where the crash occurred is suitable for avocado-raising.
Any comments on Mr. Nir as an entrepreneur or magnate in
the avocado trade, as a follow up to his weapons and/or
counter-terrorism career?
thank you

597.7 | loaded avocados? Bananas with triggers? | DELNI::GOLDSTEIN | Room 101, Ministry of Love | Wed Jan 04 1989 11:58 | 6 |
| Somewhere it said that the remote city that Nir was visiting is
a center of the Mexican government's military anti-drug operations.
So it is likely that he was arranging an arms deal with the Mexican
government.
Of course, some forms of grenade look a bit like avocados.

| Yes, good point about the grenades. Don't we all sometimes
have difficulty keeping asparagus, artichokes and avocados
separate? But all h*ll breaks loose when there's a
stray pineapple in your market basket.
By the way, what were the late Mr. Nir's accomplishments
in the media (presumably film/TV) department?
thanks

| The book "By Way of Deception" (see topic 977) suggests
that Mr. Nir may not have perished after all, in the
plane crash mentioned above.
The book notes that there were unusual circumstances
surrounding the identification of the body claimed
to be Amiram Nir's. It also suggests the possibility
of a new identity being created for Mr. Nir, as
well as perhaps a new appearance, by way of plastic
or cosmetic surgery.
The book suggests these, but does not make outright
assertions. Some sources suggest that Mr. Nir's expected
testimony before US Congress regarding the Iran/Contra
affair would have been highly embarassing (damaging
in fact) both to US-Israeli relations and to
(then) Vice President George H.W. Bush.

Actually there is some evidence that a man matching his description was

Amiram, Elvis and G. Gordon haven't been seen together publicly

"yachovv's elixir" with Danny Kaye (and Eli Cohen ?) in that
rowdy film "THE INSPECTOR GENERAL".

| The grapevine has it that some "long-secret Nir tapes"
are being broadcast by ABC-TV News on Nightline.
Has anyone heard where/how Nightline obtained the tapes?
Indeed, it's all very mysterious. Almost as mysterious
as the elusive Mr. Nir's avocado business, or his
unfortunate fatal airplane crash in Mexico.
Maybe Nightline will interview Mr. Craig Fuller
who, according to last report, is still alive.
