575.0. "Hebrew is becoming legal in the USSR" by DECSIM::GROSS (Wanted: inane comment to fill this slot) Fri Nov 04 1988 14:03
I read an item in my local newspaper last night (Middlesex News - a Ma. paper)
that stated it is now legal to study the Hebrew language in the Soviet Union.
Is this a sign of improving circumstances for Soviet Jews?
Dave
ps
The paper didn't state this, but until now the official Soviet position has been
that Yiddish is the language of the Jews. As an official ethnic minority, Jews
have always had a right to study Yiddish but could be arrested for studying
Hebrew. Didn't make Torah study easy to say the least...
