570.0. "Hebrew National not Kosher?" by 21568::GOLD (Jack E. Gold, MRO3) Thu Oct 27 1988 14:31

We recently purchased a package of Hebrew National hot dogs, and
found that they no longer have a hecksher for OU. They did have
a label with a stamp form some local Rabbi, but OU no longer approves
their Kashruth. Does anyone know the reason?

To the best of my knowledge, Hebrew National *never* had an OU on any
of its deli. Their poultry is OU, as are the Schorr's products (mustard,
pickles, etc.). Many people (including myself) do not hold by Hebrew
    National's hashgacha.

A couple of years ago, there was a media war (including full-page ads
in the NY Times) between Rabbi Shulem Rubin, who heads New York State's
Kashrus agency (NYS has a Kosher consumer law), and Hebrew National.
Rubin alleged that Hebrew National had used hot water in kashering meat.
HN asked why the complaint wasn't filed until a couple of years after
    the alleged incident.

Could someone explain this incident to me. I don't understand the
significance of using HOT water while kashering.

If you soak in hot water you are (or at least might be) cooking with the
blood still in. That's not kosher, is it?

IN GENERAL I WOULDN'T GET TOO EXCITED WHEN A COMPANY OR PRODUCT
LOSES ITS HECHSHER. MORE OFTEN THAN NOT IT IS DUE TO RABBINIC
POLITICS OR GREED. EXAMPLES ABOUND AND I DON'T WANT TO MENTION
DETAILS FOR FEAR OF LASHON HARA (EVIL GOSSIP, EVEN IF TRUE).

JUST ONE: MAVENS RESTAURANT IN CAMBRIDGE IS NO LONGER UNDER
THE SUPERVISION OF THE VAAD HARABONIM. THEY WANT TO STAY OPEN
ON SHABBAT. BUT I HEARD FROM INSIDE SOURCES THAT THE REAL STORY
BEHIND THIS IS NOT THAT MAVENS *WANTED* TO STAY OPEN ON
SHABBAT BUT THAT THEY HAVE BEEN DRIVEN TO THE WALL BY THE
VAAD HARABONIM, WHICH RIPS THEM OFF OVER $500/WEEK AND REFUSES
TO LET THEM USE NON-GLATT MEAT OR MEAT FROM LOCAL VENDORS NOT
UNDER VAAD SUPERVISION, EVEN IF UNDER ADEQUATE ORTHODOX
RABBINIC SUPERVISION.
OH WELL, RELIGION AND MONEY IS AS CORRUPT AS RELIGION AND POLITICS.

    With regard to the present Hechsher (not mentioning any names);
without going into any details, I have heard (from quite authoritative
persons) some very uncomplementary opinions with respect to this Hechsher.

If you want horror stories about hechsers, etc. ask me, both sides
of my family were/are in the kosher meat business. However my
father-in-law has told me that the N.Y. state kashrut inspectors
are hassling him more than the rabbinut.

RE .8
Actually, Chaim, we used to call them
	VAAD HA'GAZLANIM
not
 	VAAD HA'GANAVIM
--more like "highway robbery" than "breaking & entry".

Want to hear a funny story? The Vaad Ha'Ga*im gives a hechsher on lox.
Once a kosher kitchen in one of the local hotels, which is under VH
supervision, couldn't get a hold of this lox from its usual suppliers,
and finally ordered a few cases from a local meat store which is not
under VH supervision but rather under the supervision of a local
Orthodox rabbi who is well respected and above any reproach. (In fact
he gives the hashgacha to the meat store for free as a community
service -- which is why the VH is so angry at him and at the meat
store.)
Anyway, when the VH found out that the hotel got its lox from
the "pariah" meat vendor they tried to make the hotel return it...
even though it was lox under their very own supervision!!! (needless
to say in closed jars, etc.) I heard this from the meat store owner,
who told me that the hotelier, who is not Jewish, called him up rather
perplexed and asked why "the rabbi" (of the VH) had told him to return the lox!
He told the hotelier to tell "the rabbi" that if the lox was unacceptable
then he intended to take out a full page ad in the local Jewish Advocate
(newspaper) announcing that the Vaad Harabonim does not rely on the
hechsher of the Vaad Harabonim!
In the end the hotel was allowed to keep and serve the lox...

Menschen! Menschen! Thanks for the walk down memory lane...I haven't
'heard' Yiddish like this since my chilhood....buuuuuttttt about
HN....I was warned by a very frumeh NY (Upstate) source that HN's
problem is with the NY State kasruth law.

As for Maven's some of their best customers told me that they were
having much difficulty making their overhead, let alone a profit
and had decided to open on Shabbos. (At 5 big ones a week to the
    Vaad Gazlonim its understandable!)
