560.0. "Letters to Israel, anyone?" by CADSYS::REISS (Fern Alyza Reiss) Wed Oct 05 1988 15:10

I'm going on vacation to Israel. If anyone has letters they'd like
to send over, I'd be happy to take them. (That's *letters*, not
*packages*, please--I'm already schlepping an answering machine,
a case of toiletries, a desk organizer, and boxes of diaper rash
relief--no more spare suitcase space!) Send 'em over by interoffice
mail; I'll be here until October 12. I'm at HL02-2/G13. --Fern

P.S.--For anyone who's never tried Israeli mail and
is wondering about the reason for this offer: The Israeli postal
system has a habit of collecting letters, sorting them in
reverse-chronological order, and then mailing out every third.
(It's not quite that bad, but close; ironically, the symbol for
both the mail and the (equally slow) telephone system is the (speedy)
    ibex. Wishful thinking...

Maybe you are going to think I am paranoid but since this is a very open
notesfile I think you should not make this kind of offer. You can never
tell what you will get in the mail. It could be dangerous or illegal.

Thanks, Alan. I did specify letters, not packages, but perhaps I
should restrict it to *unsealed* letters. Also, I'm leaving October
    26.

I'd just like to say that I think this was a bit of overreaction
here. If you bring a package into the country it will be opened
    and inspected in any event.

Yeah, and wouldn't you be surprised if the package turned out to be full
of something illegal. Imagine explaining that to the mishmar hagvul!
Or what's worse, trying to explain to mechess (customs) that your box
full of radar detectors or stereo headphones or ??? was just "for someone
who works at DEC who has a relative in Israel".
(Not to mention explosive materials of various sorts.)

Anyway, as .2 clarified, the intention was for OPEN ENVELOPES, so let's
let this drop.
560.5This Really Happened....TAVENG::CHAIMThe Bagel NosherThu Oct 13 1988 05:1315
Just to strengthen what Zaitch said, I know personally of a case
where someone traveling to Israel was asked by a "very good friend"
to bring a mixer for his son. The "very good friend" even gave the
guy money to pay the duty.

When the guy brought the mixer to the "very good friend"'s son,
the son proceeded to disassemble the mixer in front of this guy,
and lo and behold inside was a bag of diamonds. Try explaining that
    to "Meches"....

    re: previous two

I guess my level of paranoia isn't the same as some others. So
much for trusting other people in this conference.
