552.0. "Candels anyone?" by LDYBUG::PINCK (Amy Pinck, DTN=223-4335, Long Live Duck) Tue Sep 20 1988 08:53

I have found myself in Mass. for this Yom Kippur.
Since I did not think that I would be here, I do
not have any candels...Does anyone know of a place
near the Mill where I can pick up a box of candels over
    lunch?

My mother lent me a couple of here old Shabbas
candel holders while I was home for Rosh H'shanah...
"just in case" So I have those and just need the
    candels...thanx

552.1Many (most) local supermarkets have themDECSIM::GROSSWanted: inane comment to fill this slotTue Sep 20 1988 11:025
Many of the local supermarkets have them, usually in the "ethnic foods" section.
I don't recall which ones though. You might try the Purity Supreme on Rte 62
just beyond DEC's Powdermill Rd building.

552.2Try the Star market in StowYOUNG::YOUNGTue Sep 20 1988 11:389
Most Star Markets have them, along with Yertzeit candles. Usually
it is in the "ethnic" foods section, near the cans of kosher chicken
    soup.

There is a Star market on Rt 117 in Stow, called "Country Star"
    or some such.

I saw them in the Purity Supreme on Rt 62 yesterday. They have
a display at the front of the store end of aisle 1 with "ethnic"
    holiday stuff.

I found the candels, right next to the Duck sauce in
    the star market on 117.

The markets seemed a little confused this year. They had Passover foods on
display for Rosh Hashanah.

Thought it was just my local market (Donelan's in Littleton) that
had their Jewish holidays confused! From what you say, Dave, maybe
the condition was contagious. Right smack dab in the middle of
the dairy-deli ghetto was this freestanding display filled with
candles, gefilte fish, and matzo. What could be more traditional
    on Yom Kippur than latkes!

And where were all these goodies last spring when I had to corral
a clerk to help me find the matzos? Why right between the enchiladas
    and won-ton wrappers of course.

552.8Not so strange...CURIE::GERBERGThu Sep 22 1988 17:586
While, I'll admit it does seem strange to see matzah on display
at this time of year, gefilte fish and matzah meal and candles are
not so strange. We eat chicken soup with matzah balls and gefilte
fish on the high holy days... along with chicken and tzimmes.
And of course we light the candles too.

The supermarket I go to in South Merrimack is also similarly confused. Some
times more than others.

Last year, for example, when Hannukah was approaching, they knew to order
"Jewish candles" for the holiday. Three cases of said candles were put on
special display at the end of the ethnic aisle.

They didn't get it quite right, though.

I wonder what they'll do, this year, after getting stuck with three unsold
cases of yorzeit candles, last year? (^:
