Coming into work this morning, I heard a report of a news conference that George Habash held last night. The topic of the discussion was the upcoming PLO "Summit" meeting. (At this time I don't have a written summary; hopefully it'll be in the papers right after Y"K.) Habash was asked about changes to the PLO charter, which calls for the destruction of Israel. His response was this (as well as I can quote from memory): "There will be no changes to the Charter. Any possible PLO recognition of the Jewish state, and our goals with respect to the existence of that state are separate issues." [This is consistent with a position taken by one of Arafat's liuetenants, in an interview in "The Nation" (New English-language newspaper here) last Friday. Unfortunately, I don't have the paper here at work. Perhaps after Y"K I'll type in some of the details of the interview. The entire interview was printed, and it's much too much to type it all in.] /don feinberg

For reference, Habash (a Christian) is head of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, which is a considerably more radical faction than Arafat's own Fatah. The PLO Summit will be a test of power between the factions. | |||||
