515.0. "Getting E-Mail to Isranet?" by CURIE::GOLD (Jack E. Gold, MRO3) Fri Aug 12 1988 14:23

I have recently recieved some mail (hard copy) from a friend in
Israel, who tells me he has access to a mailbox (electronic) which
I have never heard of. It is on something called ISRANET. I am familiar
with BITNET, and how to get messages to it thru the gateway. Do
any of you Gurus out there know anything about ISRANET, and how
I might get a message to it from the E-NET?

Either mail me a reply at CURIE::GOLD, or post it here for others.

Thanks in advance for any info.

    Jack,

Have you tried asking in ALIEN::GATEWAYS. They may have better
information about which (if any) US based net is attached or
equivalent. It is quite possible that it is the local name used
    for BITNET.

Are you sure the name is "ISRANET?" "INTEC" is a newly-founded
organization in Israel that is attempting to link the various computer
networks for research exchange purposes. Israel also has
BITNET, which is sometimes called EARN there, and is used primarily
by the academic community. In addition, home-grown networks include
KOORNET and GOLDNET/ELNET, which are government and industry-used.

Please do post the info here if you get it! Thanks, /Fern

What makes me think it is not BITNET is that the mail address is
quite different than I have seen. It is something like:

    Mail Box number 42514000000000/USER XYZAB123

This almost looks like a TELEX number, but I don't think so.

That looks like a PSI number, similar to those used by Telenet and
    Tymnet for international connections.

Yes, the ISRANET name is correct and I'm pretty sure that it's
X.25. It's run by Bezek, the local Israel PTT. I'll ask around,
but I have a feeling that the chances of a gateway are zip.

ISRANET provides a service for $$$. Therefore, you can get to
it from the EASYNET or BITNET etc. with the same ease that you
can now access TELENET in the US via the EASYNET. In other words
   - not easily. If you should have access to TELENET you should be
able to send mail through to the address you mentioned. It has
the correct ISRANET code in it, and I suspect that your friend is
located in Haifa (from the "4").
