514.0. "King Hussein's Claim to the West Bank" by GADDI::FERWERDA (Displaced Beiruti) Wed Aug 10 1988 10:12

What do you think should be done about the Occupied Territories
given King Hussein's recent statement? What do you think will happen?

On a news report I heard that some right-wing members of Shamir's
cabinet are pushing for annexation while people in Labor are arguing
against annexation based on the Jew/Arab ratio imbalance which might
    result.

A discussion on National Public Radio indicated that some
folks see it as an opportunity for annexation and others see it
as an opportunity for the PLO to put up or shutup (in terms of taking
on active leadership of the West Bank). The Palestinian who thought
it was an opportunity for the PLO nevertheless thought that they
wouldn't take advantage of it. He indicated that those on the West
Bank are most concerned about where to sell their vegatables (now
that Jordan doesn't feel an obligation to buy West Bank vegetables
that it doesn't need), and he said that what really should be discussed
at the PLO meeting in Iraq was where to sell the vegatables (although
he doubted anyone would talk about vegatables).

If by "active leadership", you mean the PLO replacing Jordan as
a source of funds for various schools. medical facilities, etc.,
how is the PLO supposed to do this when Israel doesn't let PLO funds
in? Someone in the New York Times a few days ago (I think it was
Rabin, but I'm not sure), said both that PLO funds wouldn't be allowed
in, and that Israel itself had no intention of replacing the Jordanian
    money.
