492.0. "Son of a Star" by TAZRAT::CHERSON (Ok,now jump through this hoop) Tue Jul 05 1988 13:32

This is a specific request to any of our fellow British Baglers:

If anybody happens to be browsing in a bookstore, be it Jewish in
orientation or otherwise, and comes upon a copy of "Son of a Star"
by Andrew Meisels, published by Arrow Publications, please send
    me MAIL.

This book and I have a long history. I borrowed it from a friend
during the time when I was going to medic's course in Zahal.
Unfortunately it fell out of my backpack and was lost. I have sworn
to find a replacement copy of this book until my dying day. However
I can't find a copy of it here in the states. I'd appreciate anybody's
    help if possible.

    B'todah,
    David

Well elf shukre Karen, I'll give them a try, however I'm a little
leery of using plastic these days. I also have the address of the
    publisher.

	*Not* Bar Kochba?

I belive that "Bar Kochba" ("Son of a star") is not a proper
name but a nickname or title. I don't know the real name
of the leader of the Zealots who died on Masada, but that's
    who Bar Kochba is.

Aaaaargh. I can't begin to straighten this out.
Bar Kochba did not have anything to do with Masada.
Bar Kochba had nothing to do with Judah the Macabee.

Bar Kochba WAS a false messiah, of sorts; and he was the major
military commander in the 3rd century (c.e.) revolt against the
Romans. I'm not sure whether Bar Kochba is or isn't a nickname -
but I don't think so.

(Is that the John Bishop who used to participate in Soapbox many many
moons ago with mostly libertarian arguments? )

	Okay...

Bar Kochba *is* a nickname. The correct name was Shimon Bar Kosiba, if I
remember correctly. He led an insurrection against the Romans in 135 AD.
He was very charismatic, but eventually got a little full of himself and
got killed (there's a tale about why this happened, but I honestly don't
remember it well enough to tell it).

I *thought* the remnants of the Bar Kochba revolt (he was already dead)
	died in Masada.

Tell you what, I'll check my Grayzel tonight and tell you tomorrow...
unless someone else fixes this mess first.

Alright so I confused a bit of Jewish history (and also forgot my
good hebrew school education). Don't get so upset at other's mistakes.
