476.0. "El Am Talmud - Masechta Brachot" by POBOX::LENOW () Mon Jun 13 1988 11:50
I am looking for some information on the El Am Talmud. We have a
study group that has been in existence at Anshe Emet in Chicago
for more than 40 years. We are about to start a new masechta and
I have suggested that we would be better off with the El Am than
the Soncino Aramaic/English Translations that we have been using
lately.
Our problem is that we no longer have "buki betalmud" that we once
had. We would also like to appeal to wider audience.
If anyone has any ideas for textual material, I would appreciate
hearing from them.
Steinsaltz is preparing some English translations but they will
not be available for some time.
I have a personal problem in that I would like to depart from the
more traditional study methods which are not critical enough for
my tastes. I remember thirty years ago studing Sanhedrin at the
Yeshiva and simultaneously studing exactly the same material with
Rabbi Jonathan Goldstein as he learned it from Saul Lieberman, Z'L.
There was a significant difference.
Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
