464.0. "reaction to Nightline" by ERICG::ERICG (Eric Goldstein) Tue May 03 1988 02:43

The following is reprinted without permission from the "Dry Bones" cartoon
in last Thursday's (April 28) Jerusalem Post:

"ABC TV is doing a show called 'Nightline from the Holy Land'. They would
have called it 'Nightline from Israel', but they're being too even-handed
to recognize the existence of our state."

Disclaimer: I didn't see it myself, so I have no personal knowledge of
any bias in the show.

I watched Monday, Tuesday, part of Wednesday, Thursday and videoed
Fridays. I have generally thought that the media has been biased
against Israel, but in all fairness this was one time I thought
that ABC did a good job of staying as objective as possible and
presenting all sides. Koppel is an excellent interviewer and didn't
give either side an easy time of it.

Come on folks, I thought ABC in general and Ted Koppel in particular were
extremely conscious of the situation and maintained an even-handed approach.
I felt all along that the title was intended to draw attention to the violence
racking what is commonly acknowledged as the birth place of three great
religions.

And there were reports from the Occupied territories ("occupied" by even
Israel's definition) and Jordan. So what should it be called - Nightline
from Israel and Extensions?

If you want to nit pick, there will be no end. May be the Palestinians can now
complain that Ted Koppel interviewed only Peres and Shamir and not Arafat on
the concluding day!

I would assume that a quote from a cartoon implies smiley faces.

Some people take such things far too seriously.

Sorry Dick
I didn't intend to come across as being testy! 8*)

But cartoons can be deadly serious too! And I feel uneasy that as reputed a
magazine as the Jerusalem Post resorts to such flippant comments on this issue;
who knows whether they meant that seriously or for jest!

Let me give you an example. The Boston Globe ran a cartoon that showed Shamir
expelling, imprisoning, etc every Palestinian who spoke up and then goes
around calling for Palestinians to speak up. That was a cartoon too. But I doubt
if there were many smiley faces either in the Globe editor's room or in
Shamir's living room vis-a-vis that cartoon.

Unfortunately, I take things coming from the Middle East a trite too seriously;
after all, you must agree, Nightline was not a comic show!

464.5Give Nightline credit for diplomacyBOLT::MINOWJe suis marxiste, tendance GrouchoTue May 03 1988 12:365
I suspect they would have had a difficult time getting Palestinians
to participate in a program called "Nightline from Israel." If *all* it
takes is a name change to solve the Middle East problems, I'm all for it.

There was a show (Mabat Sheni) last night on the series.
It was made up mostly of excerpts from the shows with a little
commentary. The moderator's bottom line was that ABC broke their
back trying to be even-handed, it was a feather in the cap of
Mr. Koppel, and finally - it was a typical piece of American
showmanship, especially the schmaltzy end with the lemon tree.
No offense - I just report the facts as I hear them.
