Sultan, if you get a copy of this, I would like one also.
So, if you'd please tell me if you have success, I'd
appreciate it. I have both VHS and Beta, so format does not matter.

Yeah, ABC failed to publicise it properly. But then, having watched Nightline
for the past four years religiously, I should have known "Town Meetings"
are three hour programs.
One thing truly shocked me. The tension in the room. I could feel it,
even though I was sitting thousands of KMs away. WOW! Now I am beginning
to feel more despondent about this tragic affair.
As Koppel said "The Palestinians are on the right; the Israelis on the left.
And I hope we could keep it that way", I felt that he was summarising the
whole story!

| This is my first reply in notes, so bear with me if I have a bit
of trouble, please.
I believe you can contact ABC in New York and pay $3 or so for a
transcript of any report. I don't know how/if they handle video
transcripts, but it is certainly worth asking.
This Reporting from Jerusalem has been quite a heart wrencher, eh?
If anyone contacts ABC please let us know.

transcripts on machine readable form.
I, for one, would be willing to help distribute unedited
transcripts to anyone (at DEC) who wishes to learn more about the

For those of you who are interested.
I contacted ABC to find out the availability of transcripts
and here is the information I got.
Yes, transcripts are available. You can either send a check
to the address given after the program or if you have a credit
card you can call
212-227-READ
The cost is $4 per show.
Also If you call VIDIO ENTERPRISES 212-887-1731 the can arrange
for a copy of a show. The spokesperson had no idea about the cost.
Finally, with regard to my idea about distributing the transcript
on easynet, I would have speak to their LEGAL department. Before
I make that call to ABC's "LEGAL" does anyone want me to and does
anyone know if I have to get anyone's permission at DEC,such as
our LEGAL, before I call.

I'm not a lawyer, but I believe that that is not the case.
It's well established that information which is broadcasted
is still covered by copyright, and is the property of the
broadcaster.
I would expect that the transcripts (the "$4 transcripts") would
contain an appropriate copyright notice. For that reason,
for example, no DEC copy center will xerox such a document.
Any wide distribution in Digital without ABC's explicit agreement
would be treated as a violation of that copyright.
Example: we once had a lawsuit from Walt Disney Productions
because we were using a picture of Mickey Mouse as a graphic
image on our graphic terminals and printers in engineering.
We weren't selling it; we were just using it as a test coupon.
They got pretty upset with us.

| I have ordered, for my own use, a copy of the transcripts. I should
have all 5 by Tuesday. I have not looked into the Video yet. I too
am missing the end of most of the shows because they ran longer
than I expected.
When I spoke to ABC they meantioned that getting written permission
to copy for non-commercial/non-legal purposes should not be a problem.
Colleges, schools, and civic organizations do it (legally) all the
time. That is why they offer the service. I would just be required
to sign a statement stating the purpose etc.

| Re: Transcripts and/or copies of tapes
Friday night, I got home late - just in time to switch on the
very tail end of Nightline.
During the closing credits, there was the usual announcement about
written transcripts, but there was also an announcement about the
availability of videotape copies of the whole series.
Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to write down the address,
but if someone calls either ABC or, in Boston, Channel 5, the local
ABC-affiliate, I'm sure the information can be obtained.

| If the videotapes turn out to be prohibitively expensive (like
over $100), we could all chip in and buy a set as a group and take
turns viewing it. (Or, even better, have a BAGELS party at somebody's
house.)
Let's wait to see if somebody comes up with the full information,
and then we can revisit this idea.

I called the place to see about the videotapes today.
This is the information I received:
1) They do not have videotapes of the Ted Koppel programs
from last week yet. There is no price and/or
availability information.
2) They do not know which, if any, or all of the tapes
will eventually become available.
3) They do not know about prices. I asked them about
the prices for other shows...
The prices range from $160 to $360 per cassette
for 1/2 hour programs.
You multiply it out yourself... :-(
Anyway, the outfit is:

| I believe I have the entire week on beta tape, except Wednesday
or Thursday when I fumbled the setting and only got the first hour.
When I was checking the end of tape for that day, it cut off in the
middle of a discussion with (I think) Amos Oz. (Did I miss much?)
I'll lend it out. I assume this is legal, since no one here is going
to fork over $nK so ABC isn't losing any business. Possibly the
easiest thing is for me to lend it to one person back East and then
s/he can organize whatever viewing arrangements you want to make.

I will volunteer to make one "seed" copy of these tapes, since
I have both Beta and VHS equipment and some duplicating gear.
(Of course, the copy will be VHS; and VHS recordings from Beta
are less then optimum, but you get what you pay for...)
That "seed" VHS copy can then get circulated in any way we might
agree to. Some group here chips in to buy the tapes that are going to
get circulated and worn out? OK?

| I've sent a beta tape to Don already. This is just the first tape
(3 hours) of 3, as I don't have other blank tapes at hand. Given
my tendency to procrastination, this one will probably cycle back
to me before I get to the video store for more blanks. It's a beta
II to beta II copy; if the vhs copy from it is too bad, I might be
able to scare up someone out here with both types of machines and make
a vhs copy. (Don -- since it's a copy, I don't care if I get it or a
replacement back, but if a replacement, not a Sony tape, please, as
they shed oxide in my machines.)

| If you're wondering what's going on with the tapes, Don and I are
still shuffling them around. However, I saw a blurb in the NY Times
to the effect that channel 13 in NY, which I think is a PBS station,
will be showing a 2 to 3 hour condensation of the Nightline series.
Perhaps this means it will be showing up on other PBS stations around
the country.
