Yes Martin, the opening had been anticipated for quite some time.
I have been meaning to get a sampler of my in-law's products over
to them. They are in the kosher meat (as was my family) business,
and on top of the usual red meat/poultry, they manufacture
continental-style kosher meat products, i.e., westphalian ham -->
westphalian beef, and assorted other wursts, etc.

3. What was Alan Dershowitz's *original* idea for an eatery?

the cook at Mavens used to be the cook at Harvard Hillel.

Partial credit awarded for the Delittante Quiz.
Zan, the cook at Mavens, was indeed the cook at Harvard Hillel last
year. She was coaxed/wooed/stolen from Hillel by Dershowitz, who
sent her off to chef school in New York in preparation for the deli's
opening. Those in the know say they won't be surprised to find
carrots creeping into all the deli's dishes--carrots were apparently a
particular favorite of hers at Hillel, where they turned up in the
soups, the entrees, and the desserts, with alarming frequency...

458.30 | One Mensch's Opinion | BLAZER::RADWIN | Gene, 276-8133 | Tue May 10 1988 13:00 | 20 |
| Tried Maven's last night:
pickles -- great
borscht -- terrific, but portion small
tongue -- tasty but very fatty
brisket -- good
light rye -- good
turkey -- dry
russian
dressing -- okay
coleslaw -- poor
menu -- too cute for comfort
prices -- expensive (e.g., $10 for brisket sandwich, coleslaw,
& soda)
All in all, nothing at Maven's -- except maybe the borscht -- was
better than at Ruben's (Harvard Ave., Brookline); Ruben's prices and
parking are, however, better than Maven's.

I was at Mavens last night and agree with the food rating, especially
regarding the cole slaw. However, I thought the food was better
than Rubins and the place had a nicer "feel" to it - I know thats
subjective. Prices though are higher than Rubins, some of them aren't
even close.

| RE: .-2
I was a Maven's on Sunday.
I also think that the menu was "cute", but I did think that
the food was an easy step function above Ruben's. The
turkey was a little dry, I agree -- the pastrami was
_outstanding_, the corned beef was better than Ruben's.
Selection is much better; I found service much better than Rubin's.
It is somewhat expensive. We "eat out" so seldom that
I did not find that an issue.
For several reasons, some time ago we simply stopped eating
at Rubin's. We had a very nice experience at Maven's.
And -- for what it's worth to you -- the standard of
Kashrut is considerably higher at Maven's. [How do I know? My
Rabbi is president of the Va'ad; he certified Maven's, and
also has detailed knowledge of Rubin's. Also,
a good personal friend of mine is the mashgiach.]

Two tips: Mavens will validate for parking at the Charles Hotel
garage; it'll be $1.50/hr. instead of the usual $3/hr. (It used
to be $1/hr at that garage without validation...) Or you can take
the Red Line; parking is $3 at Alewife station on Rt. 2.

This is not your usual deli fare; but Maven's isn't your usual deli. Unlike

in preperation for their official grand opening on Monday.
So, about 8 of us showed up (on time), had a nice chat with one of the very
apologetic owners, and ended up at the Green Street Grill in Central Square.
