Happy Yom HaAtzmaut all! /Fern BTW, several people have asked me why Israeli Independence Day is being celebrated on all different days this year. The answer seems to be that Israel celebrates both on erev Yom HaAtzmaut, and on Motzei Yom HaAtzmaut, that is, both the night before and after. So on years when it should fall on a Friday, it gets moved back a day to Thursday, so that no one will be tempted to transgress Shabbat Friday night. This makes me curious, however: does anyone know how this double-celebration and date-switching affects Sfira?

I don't believe it affects sfira at all, since Yom Ha'atzma'ut is neither YomTov nor Chol Hamo'eid. This, despite the fact that the wording the Rabbanut used to describe the days seems to have been lifted from Mo'eid Katan! I think the intention was to create the sense of Chol Hamo'eid for the days, though it's "suggested" rather than halachic. /don feinberg | |||||

Thanks Don. (Glad I waited and asked today, rather than yesterday! :~) /Fern |
