| >>>Was it done on purpose?
Give operations the benifit of the doubt and consider it an accident.
I don't work at that site but I've blown files away before and by
accident. BTW, now I support the corporate payroll system, from
a systems point of view.
>>>Is there a flaw in the product that allows that to happen by
accident?
Almost impossible! There are over 500 notes conferences in the
public directory and many many more that are private within the
company. If there were problems of this magnitude, we would have
known about it along time ago.
I take my hat off to the engineers who wrote this software (NOTES,
Decnet, and VMS). Except for uComputer programs that allow only one
user at a time, and many hacks, I believe VaxNotes is the only product
of it's kind that, in conjunction with Decnet and VMS, allow such
communications to take place.
Also, most companies, large and small would not allow a conference
of this kind to happen on 'Company Equipment and Time'.
>>>How can we learn from this so that it does not happen again.
What do you think???

I'm not sure I understand your point. The questions asked
in reply .2 are the exact ones I'm still asking myself.
I know that BAGELS was not backed up on HUMAN [Nor were any
other notesfiles on that system] daily which is why there was
not recent backup available.
People here have reason to be suspicious since this is not
the first time [it's the third in fact] that BAGELS has
mysteriously been hacked or suddenly unavailable on systems
where other notesfiles were in existence on the same device
directory and where not affected.
Neither operations or the system manager on HUMAN have had
fingers pointed at them. Speculation is just that but I'm
fairly certain that if this was an accident that a lesson
[daily backups] has been learned. If it was malicious, then
these questions only help to bring to light any possible flaws
that will not allow it to happen again.
NOTE is not a perfect software product [being the first of it's
kind it DEFINITELY is not] so we can't say FOR SURE that it's
not possible to delete a notesfile through the NOTES$SERVER
[highly improbable, sure, but not impossible].
Overall, BAGELS is alive and well on RAWFSH:: [lox maybe?].
{RAWFSH:: is my private workstation for Workstation
Security/SECURPACK Development. BAGELS will be backed up
daily to ensure that we are never 24 hrs behind. In addition,
RAWFSH:: may have to come down from time to time for testing
so I ask that you please be patient}.
Health and Happiness,
Michael
