I am looking for some reading recommendations. I have recently become interested in the history and details of various religious/cultural/social movements in Judaism. I have heard of Mitnagdim and Hasidim and throwbacks to Shammai and Hillel. Are there others, what are they, what role have they played in Judaism as a whole, what movements are afoot today, etc. Are there any specific books about this? Does anyone have any thoughts to offer on it? Thanks for any reference. Terza

Terza, I don't know what kind of background you have to build on, so forgive me if I tell you what you already know, but... Try starting with a one-volume history of Judaism. There are several reasonably good ones that you can probably find in a public library. Look in the card catalog for one or more of the following authors: Ben-Sasson Margolis and Marx Sachar Grayzel One of these should be sufficient to provide a framework to do a more in-depth study of particular areas. If (or when) you have done this and are interested in something more specific, let me know and I can suggest some other titles. Aaron |
