This has been normal DEC policy (at least in the USA) for several
years now. You don't need any procurement form: just the turkey
card and the receipt, written up on an employee expense voucher.

it took some 30 seconds of my time to fill out such a form. And
I enjoyed my turkey.

| Why aren't these things communicated a bit more widely to employees?
It IS too late for those of us who *already* retrieved our regular
Turkeys. You don't suppose they'd accept a trade-in on the bones,
do you? ;-)
Well, at least I'll know next year. [Is there a "comparable size"
limit, or can I purchase any kosher turkey that will fit in my
wagon? ;-Q --winking hungry face with tongue ready to lick the
various pots, pans, and bowls.]
Thanks for passing along the information. Some of our PSA's don't
seem very sensitive to such issues, alas.

were handed out. I got mine at Shafron's on Harvard St in Brookline.

>> Why aren't these things communicated a bit more widely to employees?
I think that it's just "numbers". My "gut" is that there
are, at most, a few 10's of folks in Mass/NH who would require
a Kosher bird, and would think to ask.
>> It IS too late for those of us who *already* retrieved our regular
>> Turkeys. You don't suppose they'd accept a trade-in on the bones,

Pardon my asking, but if you required a Kosher bird, how is it
that you accepted/ate a non-Kosher bird?
>> Some of our PSA's don't
>> seem very sensitive to such issues, alas.
I don't think that observant Jews make up much of even a
minority in Digital...

418.8 | They can't account for all options. Tofu for vegetarians? | RSTS32::KASPER | Inquiry, Sir: A Snootfull? | Wed Dec 30 1987 12:34 | 22 |
| I think the assumption is that if you don't want/can't use the bird,
you'll give the card to a friend with a big family, or donate it to the
feed-the-needy-one-really-good-meal-a-year programs - as I recall boxes
for the latter purpose were provided at turkey distribution.
[Please don't think I'm putting down the programs for the needy. I
think they're a very worthwhile endeavor. It bothers me, though, that
so many people {myself included, to be honest -- this has generated
yet another resolution to do something for the Less Fortunate} let that
one annual gesture of a few bucks make them feel that they're "doing
something to stop hunger." It's a drop in the proverbial bucket. But
I do like to see DEC making people think about that option].
When I first heard about the turkey distribution, I thought it was a
little tacky -- if they held it the week before Thanksgiving it would
be a lot more useful. Of course we can eat turkey any time, but the
"Christmas turkey" struck me as a bit blind. Finding out that they
allow you to get a Kosher bird instead makes me much more comfortable
with the whole thing.

| Re: tofu for vegetarians
Actually, people who are vegetarians on "ethical" rather than health
grounds have been trying for years to save the birds destined for
them from being killed. If you don't accept a turkey, DEC gives
it to charity; not exactly an improvement from the bird's point
of view.

My reply is similar to the spirit expressed by .8
I don't *require* a kosher turkey, but that doesn't mean
I don't appreciate the choice, and in fact, I would have
gotten one. I, too, wish it could be available for
Thanksgiving for those not having celebratory Christmas
dinners.
Next year I *will* get a kosher turkey!

| It seems to me that if you observe the dietary laws and eat fowl
only if it is kosher, then you should take advantage of the
Kosher turkey offer.
It also seems to me that if you do eat non-kosher fowl and would
prefer a kosher turkey for some other reason (tastes better, fresh
rather than frozen, or whatever), then you are abusing the
privilege. If enough people abuse the privilege, it will
disappear.

| I got the information on retrieving your turkey card for a kosher
turkey today from our Personnel office:
Purchase a 12-14 pound turkey, take the receipt together with
the turkey card to your manager and fill out a Miscellaneous
Procurement Voucher. The manager has the form signed by local
personnel and forwards it to Ronnie Lorenzen at CFO2-2/C38 no
later than 13 January, 1989. The voucher will be signed by the
CC manager, a memo to authorize the reimbursement will be attached
and the voucher returned to the employee to be cleared at their
local petty cash office. Questions should be directed to
Ronnie Lorenzen DTN 251-1312 or (508) 264-1312.

| In the past, many of us have justifiably complained about insensitivity
on the part of certain people in Digital. It seems only fair to acknowledge
it when others not only make the effort to take into account Jewish observance,
but also to let us know that this is being done.
The following is taken from an article on the front page of the SCIT Connection
(the newsletter for the Semiconductor and Interconnect Technology group)
for December, 1989:
"Employees requesting kosher turkeys must purchase one themselves weighing
between 12-14 pounds and submit a completed Miscellaneous Procurement Voucher
along with the original receipt and turkey card to:
[ list of names and mailstops follows ]
Deadline date for corporate reimbursement on kosher turkeys is January 8,
1990."

HOW DO I GET A TURKEY CARD?
---------------------------
The Payroll Department will issue a NEW employee turkey card with the Digital
employee paychecks the Thursday before distribution. MRO employees will
receive their turkey cards with their paychecks on WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 27th.
Digital TAGS are eligible to receive a holiday turkey. (TAGS are on the
Digital payroll system and are considered employees of the company.)
If you do not receive your turkey card with your paycheck contact your
site coordinator.
MUST I PICK UP MY TURKEY ON MY DELEGATED DATE
---------------------------------------------
Yes. Exact population counts have been given to the Turkey Distribution
Coordinator at each site, on the scheduled day, and THAT DAY ONLY. We do not
have storage facilities for the turkeys, and if you cannot pick up your
turkey, you must make arrangements for someone to pick it up for you. All
remaining turkeys are sent back to the Distribution site at the end of the
day.
CAN I DONATE MY TURKEY TO CHARITY?
----------------------------------
Yes. Any employee wishing to donate their turkey to charity may do so by
marking "CHARITY" across the turkey card, and placing the card in the
Charity Box at your facility or mail it to your site coordinator.
These turkeys will be donated to local service agencies for distribution to
the community.
ARE KOSHER TURKEYS AVAILABLE?
-----------------------------
Employees requesting kosher turkeys must purchase one on their own, weighing
between 12-14 pounds. You must submit a MISCELLANEOUS PROCUREMENT VOUCHER to
Denise Hurley MRO2-2/D4. The receipt, along with the turkey card, must be
sent along with the voucher. In order for an employee to be reimbursed,
vouchers must be submitted prior to January 4, 1992. The voucher will be
approved by Corporate Employees Services and Recreation, a memo to authorize
the reimbursement will be attached, and the voucher returned to you to be
processed through Petty Cash.
For more information contact your site coordinator:
