Shalom! A close friend of mine, an Israeli, has sent word his mom died yesterday. He and I were very close and worked together for some time before he returned to Israel. I would like to send my condolences to him. Is there anything that would be particularly meaningful in the Hebrew/Jewish tradition to send him or to write to him in a card or letter? He is not Orthodox. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks! Velehitraut, Joe

JOE While I am not sure of the traditions for Israelis, my wife and I have found it the custom locally to send a card. Most Conservative and Reform Temples have a gift shop with condolence cards. Many Jewish bookstores also carry 'greeting/event cards'. There is also two Jewish Women's organizations that can also help, Hadassah, and ORT. There profit goes to charites in Isreal. What you might also consider is planting a tree in Israel in his mother's name. It is a custom in some circles to mark an event by planting a tree. By planting the tree you are telling your friend that you cared enough to do something more than 'just' sending a card and that his mother will be remembered for as logn as the tree shall live. I beleive that it cost about $10 or $15, and it is 'tax deductable'. Most temples can help and I beleive the Israel consulate office can also assist. Mordecai Ben_Zeef | |||||

Joe I would second having a tree planted. This is especially appropriate if there is not specified or you do not know of a charity suggested for memorial donations. Gavriel |
