380.1NEW QUARTERS IN OLD JERUSALEMTAVMTS::JUANWed Oct 21 1987 09:0522
    IF MY MEMORY DOES NOT BETRY ME, THE FIRST QUARTER TO BE BUILT OUTSIDE
    THE WALLS OF JERUSALEM WAS "YEMIN MOSHE", THE QUARTER BUILT BY THE
    PHILANTROPIST SIR MOSES MONTEFIORE; YEMIN MOSHE IS "THE RIGHT HAND
    OF MOSHE" AND WAS NAMED SO AFTER MOSES MONTEFIORE. THIS WAS BEGUN
    IN THE LAST QUARTER OF THE 19TH CENTURY, BY 1880 APPROX.

    A FEW YEARS LATER, "MEAH SHEARIM" (100 GATES) WAS BUILT AND WAS
    A VERY INNOVATIVE QUARTER, IT WAS UNHEARD OF EXTREME RELIGIOUS PEOPLE
    TO SETTLE OUTSIDE THE WALLS OF THE CITY; TODAY MEAH SHEARIM IS PERHAPS
    THE MOST ULTRACONSERVATIVE QUARTETR OF JERUSALEM.

    BOTH YEMIN MOSHE AND MEAH SHEARIM WERE ORIGINALLY BUILT ALMOST AS
    FORTRESSES, WITH HIGH WALLS SURROUNDING THEM AND IRON GATES, WHICH
    SHOWS THE CONDITIONS OF THE LIFE OUTSIDE THE CITY'S WALLS, THE TURKISH
    GOVERNMENT THEN WAS VERY INNEFFECTIVE IN KEEPING ORDER AND SAFETY
    OF THE CITIZENS. THE MOVE TOWARDS SETTLEMENT OUTSIDE THE OLD CITY
    WALLS WAS PROMOTED BY THE SANITARY CONDITIONS WITHIN.

    REGARDS,

    JUAN-CARLOS

380.3Ye shall hear in the outskirts of Jerusalem...TAVMTS::JUANMon Oct 26 1987 10:1812
    My apoloigies to you all for the supposed "shouting".

    Here, in Israel, we are used to use our keyboards in Uppercase for
    English letters and Lowercase for Hebrew. As a habit, I begun typing
    UPPERCASE, but with no shouting intentions, as you can understand
    from the text. If you'd like, think I was trying to talk with someone
    hard of hearing....

    Regards,

    Juan-Carlos "Shouting" Kiel
