371.0. "Need names with 'S' or soft 'C' ASAP!!" by RABBIT::HABER (kudos to working mothers of toddlers) Tue Sep 22 1987 10:19

    Need some suggestions for names, please ----

    We're expecting in about 4 weeks [nothing like waiting till the
    last minute, huh?!] and need some suggestions for names. Baby will
    be named after our grandmothers, Sadye [actually Cecil] and Emma
    [this will be middle name]. Hebrew names are okay; don't want anything
    too 'Christian' (hubby looks up meanings and doesn't like some of
    what we've dound so far). We don't know the sex of this child,
    so need some for both sexes; unisex is okay too -- our older son
    is Jaime Seth; baby would have seen Jaime either way with different
    middle name.

    Thanks for your help.

371.1Tried "The Hebrew Name Dictionary"?IAGO::SCHOELLERCaught in an information firestormTue Sep 22 1987 11:5315
    Shalom Sandy, Jeff and Jaime,

    Have you tried the Hebrew Name Dictionary. It's a big red paper back
    book, available from the Israel Book store or the Schoeller lending
    library. (I can send through internal mail 8^{) .)

    It contains an extensive concordance of English and Hebrew names. It
    also gives the correct Hebrew spellings, suggestions for
    getting around the Teutonic name problems, and etymologies of the names.

    If you want to borrow my copy let me know by mail and I will send it.

371.2Try ShaynaSRFSUP::PLAUTMiltTue Sep 22 1987 16:377
    Nine years ago I named my daughter Shayna and she has lived up to
    it. Perhaps you will consider Shayna if you have a girl. May you
    have as much nachas with your new child as I have had with mine.
    Lot's of Mazel.  Shona Tova!

371.3How about Shirley or SharonRETORT::RONWed Oct 07 1987 10:0112
If you are considering names starting with the 'sh' sound, you may
like Shirley and/or Sharon. Both are Hebrew names, but sound
familiar to the American ear.

Shirley (pronounced in Hebrew Shier-lee) means 'my song'. Sharon
(pronounced in Hebrew Shu-ron, with the emphasis on the 'r'), is
used in Israel uni-sexually and for both given and surnames. It
refers to the central strip in the land of Israel.

    How about Shulamite. That's something to sing about!
    If a boy then Shimshon, that choice of name indicates good judgement.
    And he should only be a schtarker! Mazel Tov.

371.5Shaina Elise is here!RABBIT::HABERkudos to working mothers of toddlersSat Dec 05 1987 17:4112
    Shaina Elise, hebrew name Zesel Nechemya, arrived screaming on Oct.
    25, 1987, at 6:51AM.  She was a healthy 6 lbs, 12 oz and 20.5 inches.

    We're all thrilled with her, especially her big brother (hope that
    lasts!)

    Thanks to everyone for your suggestions, and to Dick for lending
    us his name dictionary -- very interesting.

    Shalom!

371.6Name Dictionary?ABACUS::RADWINI think, fer sureSat Mar 17 1990 00:5912
    In a note -- that I can't seem to relocate -- on children's names,
    mention was made of a Name Dictionary. Anyone know where I can
    locate it (the Dictionary, not the note) to either purchase or borrow.

    Thanks,

371.7Israel Book ShopCLT::CLTMAX::dickSchoeller - Failed XperimentMon Mar 19 1990 16:4010
Gene,

I got it at Israel Book Shop on Harvard St. in Brookline. We now have serveral
different ones. The two best are both by Alfred Kolatch. The large red paper
back one being the better of the two (IMHO).

I would offer mine out to loan again but it is pretty regular use these days
at our house.

    Gene -

Beth Elohim Library has a copy (in Acton). I am the librarian and can
coordinate with you if you want to borrow it. Send mail to Social::Waky
if you want to look into it -

Also, I'm quite sure that Israel Bookstore in Brookline or Kolbo, also
there, would have it for purchase - call them before you shlep into town
(both are open on Sundays for us working folks...)
