355.0. "correction" by MTBLUE::SPECTOR_DAVI () Wed Sep 02 1987 13:40

	>'G_d does not hear the prayer of a Jew'

It was nor Falwell who said that but a minister from Texas.

also.. it is irrelevant whether it was Stalin and Hitler or
their underlings that cut the actual agreement.

I hate to disagree with you but I saw Jerry Falwell himself utter
those words on tv. You must be referring to Billy James Hargis.

The minister was the head of the Southern Baptist Conference.

Farwell has never been the head of the conference. Farwell often tells
of his conversations with M. Begin on his TV shows.

Chatting with Begin does not mean that he believes that G_d hears
    the prayers of a Jew.

Some christians believe that _their_ "salvation" (second coming)
will begin with the return of Jews to Israel, and their MASS CONVERSION
to Christianity. Thus they need an Israel to exist so that they
    can convert us, all, there!

Many christian teachers still preach this theory of the "Jewish
Problem" -- that there can be no salvation for them when there are
still Jews who deny Jesus' Messiahood. (I've seen this idea from
Harold Ockenga of Gordon-Conwell seminary in Mass.) Falwell and
friends thus see themselves as fattening Israel up for the kill...

I don't want to see this note stretched out any further than it
    is, but re: .2

The head of the Southern Baptist conference was/is Bailey Smith.
He made some other asinine quote about G-d and the Jews, but not
the one that Falwell made. I know what I saw and heard, and that
certainly was Jerry Falwell in front of my eyes, and not a reasonable
    facsimile.

The religious reporter for CBS news network attributed the remark
to a past president of the SBC whose name escapes me. As for what
you saw or did not see I have seen Jerry Farwell a number of what
I would consider positive statements towards Jews and some subtle
    anti_semetic remarks. But since I don't have a video-tape and you
probably don't all we can do is get into a pissing contest.
