351.0. "Mourning the Dead" by AKOV68::SHEPRO (Good enough for Gov't Work) Mon Aug 31 1987 09:19
My Uncle, (mother's brother) was killed in a train accident about
18 years ago. He was an only son (had two sisters) and his father,
my grandfather is dead. My grandmother is not mentally well (pushing
93).
This weekend, my parents were visiting my wife and me. My mom
mentioned that it is the anniversary of the accident and that they
should go to your'-stite. We took my parents to Keheleth-Israel
for Mincha-Mariv. As my mom felt uncomfortable there, being the
only woman, my father and I went in and said the prayers, etc.
My wife asked if my father is a close enough relative, being a
brother-in-law. Am I a close enough relative being a nephew?

| I think either is close enough. I think that what is important is
that someone say Kaddish. I recall an orthodox friend in high school
who said Kaddish as a proxy. (A donation was made to the shul by
the "principal mourners" to have Kaddish said for the required year).
What I'm not clear on is who should light Yahrtsiet candles.
