339.0. "ACM Arabic Article" by ULTRA::ELLIS (David Ellis) Thu Aug 06 1987 11:33

The latest issue of _Communications of the ACM_ (July '87) has a cover
article on "Arabic Word Processing". The article describes a project at
Xerox providing word-processing functions for the Arabic and Hebrew
alphabets. I found the article interesting. It's nice to see collaboration
between people with Arabic and Jewish surnames.

There is one discordant note, however. Figure 3 on Page 603 shows a
workstation screen with several Hebrew and Arabic windows. One of the
windows has a map of the Middle East in which every country is labeled with
its Arabic name. Except Israel, which is labeled with an empty shaded box.
Hmmm...

Yes, indeed. Did you know that we have an Arabic product?
Available now, from DEC Direct, you too can purchase...

	ARABIC P/OS R3.1 for the PRO/380!!!

Yes, indeed we have two modes - DECMode and AL-Arabi character
sets. All four cases included - typing right to left (except
in English mode). Some Arabic characters even correctly occupy
two character cells on the screen. A special font ROM is available
to print on the LN03...

I've still not heard of a "standard" DEC product which does
Hebrew, however. How about an international SPELL checker?

But the occupied territories are included...

    Re. .1:

Our LEG (Israel) has been producing local Hebrew terminals, printers,
work_stations, and etc. which are available locally via DEC Direct.

To the best of our knowledge the ARABIC P/OS R3.1 is not a standard
    product either.
