315.0. "Any Yiddishists out there?" by HITEST::HUBSCHMAN () Wed Jun 03 1987 15:14

Greetings,

I am looking for opportunities to speak Yiddish with people who are
fluent or comfortable with the language. When I was a child we only
spoke Yiddish at home, but since then I've spoken mostly english and
I'm concerned that my Yiddish is becoming rusty beyon recovery. Does
anybody have any pointers to Yiddish clubs out there, either
associated with some college or organization, or private? Any other
suggestions would be welcomed also. I live in Brookline, but work in
Marlboro, so I'm somewhat flexible as to travelling.

thanks,

harold

I believe the Workman's Circle has a location in Brookline that
sponsors just the activities you have in mind, as well as Yiddish
courses and a library. The Israel Book Shop carries the Forvertz
(Forward) and another Yiddish weekly -- and the shop owners speak
Yiddish and can probably tell you where you can find some lively
conversation. Drop in sometime (Harvard St just above Kehillath
    Israel synagogue).

I too spoke only Yiddish when I was young, and have become very
rusty. However, when I was last in Israel, I spoke to some of my
relatives who knew no English, and I know almost no Hebrew. Funny
how it started to come back. I even began to think in Yiddish! The
bottom line is I think you never really loose a language, however
over time it becomes easier to understand it than to speak it.

By the way, I am in MR03 and would be happy to speak Yiddish with
you if you like, and if you don't mind my mistakes.

I'm pretty sure the Temple in Sudbury also teaches abasic course
    in Yiddish.
