| The only Hebrew Word Processing Package I have heard about is available
for Apple PCs. I believe the supplier is in Chicago. They also
carry games, biblical stories, etc. all for PCs. I will try to
get the name, address, phone # and post them ASAP.
One of the DEC employees in the Hertzliya office that has been very
helpful to me is Avi Bar-Zion. He can be reached on TAV02::BAR,
BAR-ZION @ISO, or DTN 882-8355 (with +7 hr time difference from East
Coast).

| Bigger Byte in New York is able to supply some Hebrew word
processors and Hebrew character generator chips for some PC's.
I know that they deal with WORLDMILL and perhaps others.
There are, in fact, a fair number of Herbrew/English word
processors for IBM PC's and clones. There are also some on
Apple. As to the DECmate, we never did a Hebrew option for it,
thus it was never sold here. The Rainbow used to have a few word
processors which were supported, WORLDMILL being one of them. I
have been told that it is still supported.

Company in Chicago is DAVKA. Their phone number is 1-800-621-8227.
They will send you a catalog and add you to their perpetual mailing
list.
They provide Software for IBM, Commadore, and Atari, but mostly for
APPLES. They write most of their own software or do modifications
to existing packages.
They have an Apple 2C package with Mono Monitor, and Hebrew SW for
$799.00 (you can't get it wholesale).

| If your friend is willing to buy a Vax, there is a TPU version produced
in DEC-Israel that works with Hebrew characters. I think TPU is
wonderful, but I'm biased. You do need a special terminal,
unfortunately, and I don't know if the terminal is available in
the U.S. Let me know if you're interested and you can't figure
out who to talk to/what to do, and i'll try to unblock the road
for you.

Any suggestions on how to get a Hebrew character set for the VAXstation.
I know you can mess around with fonts fairly liberally. But I am not
sure about changing the directionality of the default text in a
terminal emulation window.

| X version 11 (in testing now) has "directionality" codes in the
font headers. I'm not certain what font construction tools
are available, however. There is an X notesfile somewhere.

| At DecWorld, there is going to be a demnstration of a Chinese word
processor. The hardware is a PC Clone and the software involves
a patch to SYS$LIBRARY:EDTSHR.EXE (I know - I installed it). How
it works, well, you'll have to go to DecWorld to the Descrete
Manufactuing Area.
Please excse my spelling. My typing is bad, and having to do this
on a non-VT100 compatable terminal where a delete key is simulated
and not present makes things diffiuclt.

| "Fontmaster-II" is a word processing system written for the Commodore
64 computer. Besides having most of the features you would normally
find in a word processor, it also has a pair of font editors built
in. One of them allows you to create the font as seen on the editing
screen and the other allows you to design a "near letter quality"
(18 by 16 dot matrix) type font. The disk comes with over 30 off-the-
shelf fonts, including Hebrew, Greek and Russian as well as a number
of decorative English fonts. As many as 9 different fonts may be
intermixed in the same document in many sizes/widths. The Hebrew
editor allows the cursor to run from right to left and displays
in Hebrew on the screen. I designed one of the fonts used on the
disk and I also designed a Hebrew book text font (with vowels) which
I will share with anybody who wants it. According to our Rabbi,
it is the best PC font he has seen and is better that those used
by many publishers. If necessary, one could design additional Hebrew
fonts such as cursive or block lettering.

The Hebrew option for VMS based VAXstations is all soft (no
hardware required). It is layered on top of VWS v3.1.
It gives you fonts, dynamic keyboard remapping, and
VT220/Hebrew functionality in the terminal window.

and documentation somewhere and give you a pointer.

The current release of the Hebrew option is for VWS v3.1 ONLY.
We are currently working on the V3.2 version. I can't say for
certain when the v3.2 will be ready. Somewhere around two to
three months. Yes, the option, which includes the fonts, runs
on a GPX, VSII, and VAXstation 2000.

ScriptPrinter (LN03R) Hebrew Support Option. They should work on
an LPS40. If you want to try them out I can let you have the
LN03R kit but you will have to extract the fonts yourself.

| Forgive my ignorance, but...
Now that I have the Postscript font commands, how do I use them
to print on the LPS40 or LN03R? How do I define to the system that
the file I just built with my editor needs to use the Hebrew
definitions in Postscript.
Definately not a software maven.

If you created a postscript file, then to print it you should
include one of the postscript fonts (at the top of the file) and
then print it with the command:
PRINT/PARA=(DATA_TYPE=POSTSCRIPT) file /QUEUE=print_queue
You could also install the LN03R Hebrew option, (I don't have an
LN03R, so I didn't install the kit, I merely extracted the fonts
from the libraries). If the fonts are added (installed) in the
device control library then you don't have to include each font in
your source file, you can just use the commands shown in the LN03R
release notes.
Installing the kit, is certainly the more user-friendly option.
