248.0. "Givat Pinhas Commemoration" by TAVENG::CHAIM (Le'Chaim) Thu Dec 11 1986 10:32

I would like to relate some of the events that took place in
Jerusalem over the past week during the rememberance of the Yor
Ziet (Annivesary of the day of passing) of the father of the Bostonner
Rebbe and the commemoration of Givat Pinhas (The Boston Hasidic Center
    in Israel).

All day Monday many prominant Rabbis and Rebbes came to the Bostoner Rebbe's
apartment in Har Nof to write letters in a Sefer Torah scroll
that was donated to Givat Pinhas by the Goldman family from Brrokline.
Among these were Rav Shach, Rav Shlomo Zalman Orbach, Rav Aharon
Feldman, Dayan Weiss, Rav Avraham Ginechovsky, the Viznitzer Rebbe,
the Belzer Rebbe, the Chustar Rav, and others...

On Tuesday evening the Rebbe himself wrote the final letters into
the Sefer Torah after which thousands of residents and guests escorted
the Sefer Torah with singing and dancing from the Rebbe's apartment
to the Holy Ark in Givat Pinhas. The prosession (Hachnasat Sefer
Torah) was accompanied by a band and children from the local
Sanhedrin Talmud Torah who bore candels.

After the Hachnasat Sefer Torah there were some speaches from the
Chief Sefardic Rabbi of Israel and the two Chief Rabbis of jerusalem.
Two letters, one from President Reagan and one from Senator Kennedy,
were read. The Rebbe offered a Le'Chaim (a toast) to all the guests.

Later on that evening a dinner in honor of the Yor Ziet of the Rebbe's
father was held in Givat Pinhas. The Rebbe said over the final passage
from the Talmud and said the Hadran (prayer said upon the finishing
of the Talmud). The finishing of the Talmud was collective among
    the residents of Har Nof.

The Rebbe spoke about the importance of reaching out to the needs
of one's neighbor no matter what he be. The Rebbe emphasised that
this is the true Midas Hachesed (trait of kindness) as seen through
the actions of the Avot (our forefathers). This was also the Mida
so prominantly found in Rav Pinhas David Zatzal (R.I.P), the Rebbe's
    father.

The dinner was accompanied by much singing and dancing.
