232.0. "Geneva.. here I come...." by TAV02::ALLIN1V2 (Le'Chaim) Sun Nov 16 1986 08:04

    I might have to be in Geneva in the near future (first week in Dec.).

    I am religious and will most likely have to stay over for Shabbat
    since the meetings that I'll be attending will end sometime Friday
    afternoon (Dec. 5).

    I understand that there is one Kosher retaurant in Geneva, The Shalom.

    1- What are the normal hours during the week?

    1a-	Is it open on Shabbat (paying in advance of course)?

    2-	What would be the closest nice hotel to the restaurant?

    3-	Is there an Orthodox Shul nearby?

    4-	What time will candle lighting be the Shabbat of Dec. 5?

    5-	What time will be Motzei Shabbat(Shabbat ending) that Shabbat?

    6-	Are there any Kosher hotels within an hour of Geneva that have
    	meals?

    7-	Any other bright ideas what one might arrange for Shabbat

    Thanks in advance for any help.

232.2Better Late than Never...TAVENG::CHAIMLe'ChaimTue Jan 20 1987 01:0013
    Miriam,

    Thanks for the reply.

    I had a very pleasant stay (4 days) in Geneva. I found the Kosher
    restaurant. It was quite good (and expensive).

    Someone I know (the Bostonner Rebbe) arranged for me to be the guests
    of the Benedicts for Shabbat. Do you know them?

    Thanks,

    Cb.
232.3Et la lumiere fut...SHIRE::MILLIOTZoziau, Blandine & CoTue Jan 20 1987 10:4027
    No, sorry, Cb. (?), I know the Benedicks, but the Benedicts I don't.

    I thought it was the Benedicks you were speaking about, because
    it is a Jewish family too. My mother will marry the brother-in-law
    of one of them in April, it's why "j'ai dresse l'oreille" (to draw
    up the ear ??).

    Could you tell me where the "Shalom" is ? I know there is a kosher
    restaurant near the sepharad "synagogue" (the specific word doesn't
    exist in the little dictionary I am using), but I don't know its
    name.

    Where have you been for the Shabbat Service (on Friday evening) ?
    In Malagnou (Sepharad), or at the Place de la Synagogue (Askenaze) ?

    It's very-very difficult for me to write in English. Can I ask you
    to correct me ? Could you write in French ?

    I asked you a lot of questions... Bon courage !!

    Mimi.
232.4No French Today...TAVENG::CHAIMLe'ChaimWed Jan 21 1987 01:1915
    Sorry Mimi... no French, but your English is VERY good... keep it
    up.

    The Shalom restaurant is at 78 Rue du Rhone in the same building
    as the Bank Leumi.

    There is supposed to be another restaurant somewhere on Rue Mangou.
    I believe this is near the Sephardic Shul. I believe it is dairy.
    I didn't have the opportunity to try it.

    I attended the same Shul for the entire Shabbat. It is also on the
    Rue du Rhone (number ?) on a second floor. This is where my host
    prays. It is somewhat of a Chasidic Shteebal.
