I saw a marvelous movie at Copley Place Cinema yesterday called "Partisans of Vilna". I don't believe it will be shown anywhere else in New England, so unfortunately for you sububanites, this means a forced trip to Boston. Also, I don't know how long the run will last. ABOUT THE MOVIE: This is a 130 minute documentary about Jewish youth in the Vilna ghetto beween the years 1941 and 1943 who organized and armed themselves to resist the expected German liquidation (liquidation = deportation and murder of all remaining Jews in the ghetto). In 1943, when the time came, they couldn't organize the ghetto population to rebel with them, so they ended up escaping the ghetto and joining partisan fighters. There was also a tale to tell there...the anti-semitism of the local populace and the Soviet gov't; they weren't allowed (for the most part) to remain in Jewish battalions under Jewish command, were forced to give up the weapons which they had bought with their blood during the ghetto years to other units, etc. The movie is about half historical footage from the war years and half recent interviews conducted with the surviving partisans. The movie narration is in English, the interviews are about half in Yiddish and half in Hebrew, with English subtitles. It's a great movie; go see it!
