212.0. "At last, another source" by NONODE::CHERSON (A Symbol of Reality) Fri Oct 17 1986 11:32

    Finally there is an alternative to the Israel Book Shop in Brookline,
    at least as far as Hebrew children's books and "objets d'art" is
    concerned. Kol-Bo, which is a block down on the other side of
    Harvard st., is now selling children's books. I am buying my daughter
    a set of Rechov Sumsum(Sesame St.)books for her there.

    Actually there has always been another source of Judaica, there
    is a book store in Randolph, but that is a bitch to get to if you
    don't live on the South Shore. So it added up to the Israel Book
    Shop being a virtual monopoly, and I've always considered them to
    be a bunch of ganavim in relation to prices, etc.

212.1Here's anotherGRECO::FRYDMANFri Oct 17 1986 11:566
    There is another source, the New England Judaica Center in the floor
    below Kosher Mart on Chestnut Hill Ave in Brighton.

    BTW--That store in Randolph is owned by the same people who own
    the Israel Book Shop. (The IBS book prices are on par with NYC;
    it's only the "judaica" that seems high!)

    If it's true that the store in Randolph is owned by the IBS, then
    their monopoly is twice as bad. As far as NYC prices are concerned,
    I don't know whether that is a negative or positive impact.

    I'll check out the N.E. Judaica Center for content and prices.
    I still would like to see more competition to IBS.

212.3Try the Mails...FULTON::GOLDJack E. Gold, MRO3Mon Oct 20 1986 16:456
    As an additional option, there are several companies specializing
    in mail order. Some are less expensive, but one or two that I know
    of charge even more than IBS. If you are interested, I can get you
    some names and addresses, especially if you are interested in books.

212.4Mail order sourcesFULTON::GOLDJack E. Gold, MRO3Wed Oct 22 1986 16:0964
Here are some mail order sources:

The Jonathan David Co.
68-22 Eliot Ave.
Middle Village, NY 11379
718-456-8611

They publish a Judaica book guide, which I received during the holidays. Books
are discounted, and they seem to have a wide selection.

Eeyore's
Books for Children
2252 Broadway
New York, NY 10024

Request their catalog of Books of Jewish Interest for Children.

The Source for Everything Jewish
Hamakor Judaica
6112 North Lincoln Ave
P.O. Box 59453
Chicago, IL 60659

Request their catalog. They have a wide variety of merchandise, from books to
giftware to religious articles. They are pretty expensive, but they do have
some nice stuff.

Ziontalis
48 Eldridge St.
New York, NY 10002
212-925-8558

This is primarily a Talis manufacturer, but they do have other items.

Publishers Central Bureau
1 Champion Way
Avenel, NJ 07001-9987

This company deals in close out books and records, and publishes a catalog
many times during the year. I have gotten some very inexpensive Jewish books
from them, on a catch as catch can basis.

B'nai Brith Jewish Book Club

I forgot to get this address. They have a monthly book catalog which they send
out. Most books are discounted 20%. You are not required to buy, but you do
have to send back a card every month. If you are interested in this let me
know and I will bring you in a card to fill in. I am very happy with their
service and their wide variety of up to date titles, including children's
books.

I hope this list helps you.

Regards,
Jack

    For those of you in the Framingham area - there is SABBATH LIGHTS.
    Located in a small strip mall between Routes 9 and 30 - next to
    May Garden Chinese restaurant. I'm not sure if it has what you
    are looking for - I've only gone in for mah jong cards and inquiries
    re: mah jong sets. Call for info - obviously not Fri afternoon
    or Saturdays.
