208.0. "Don't Limit Access to BAGELS!" by TOPDOC::SLOANE (Notable notes from -bs- ) Wed Oct 08 1986 14:24

Why is BAGELS being closed to non-members?

It's nice to see comments and questions from occasional readers.
Open files let people browse around, and sample things. Closing
the file will stop this, because people won't go through the
    necessary procedure to access it.

In addition, closing the file will make it too clannish. It gives
the appearance that you have something to hide, or have some sort
of screening process before you let people in. Most people will
think it is for Jews only, and they will wonder what you are hiding.

I say we should leave it open.

Open files let people mess around, and abuse things. Closing the
file will stop this, because people will HAVE to go through
the necessary procedure to access it.

Then let them send me mail and ask for membership.

I have a simple screeing process people:

	1. If you contribute more grief then beneficial information,
YOU WILL NOT BE A MEMBER.

	2. If you flame at me by personal mail,
YOU WILL NOT BE A MEMBER.

	3. If you try to access BAGELS.NOTE by ANY other method than NOTES,
YOU WILL NOT BE A MEMBER. (And a Security check will be run)

There is an alternative to keeping BAGELS members-only.

As suggested in the VAXNOTES conference on CLT:: (note 891), two copies of
BAGELS could be maintained -- the master copy would be members-only and
writable, while the slave copy (kept consistent with the master) would be
accessible to everyone but read-only. A daily batch job could update the
slave from the master.

With this workaround, anybody could follow what's going on, but one would
have to enroll as a member to say anything. The primary cost of this
workaround would be space, and if this cost is acceptable, security and
accessibility can both be achieved.

I will take this under consideration with my System
    Manager.

208.4Can we have a nicer error message?RICKS::KRAVITZTerrapinSat Oct 11 1986 21:045
It would be nice if, instead of getting "You are not a member of
this conference", some sort of message *inviting* membership could
be returned instead. Any VAXNOTES or TPU gurus know?

    Or BETTER:

If a conference goes members only (Sounds like a clothing
commercial) then it can check the username of the person
accessing and if there is a note already in the conference
by that person (In a registration note) then it will add
the person automatically and send mail to the MOD.

	    NOW THAT's AND enhancement.

I must have missed something, but who/why is doing what to BAGELS?
BTW maybe our distinguished moderator can share some of his experiences
in the Holy Land (under a separate note , of course)?

Someone ( I shan't mention names) who works in Parker Street
who I used to rent a room from was Accessing our cluster
with every conceivable method. (PHONE, NOTES, DIR)
Security started an investigation and suggested (Left it
up to me) to do whatever necessary to prevent corruption
of the file. SInce that time things have been locked up.
BAGELS will be public soon. For now, please keep the flames a little
    lower.

208.8then we have to have membership cards.NY1MM::BCOHENMon Nov 10 1986 16:0118

    Just wait one second!!!!
What's this memebership buisness. The first thing a Jewish org.
does is create memebership and committees, and then they charge
membership dues, and then the Ladies Auxilary with those stupid
hat shows, and then we have a building fund appeal.
I can just imagine, accessing the conference and getting a note
    which reads:

And for only $18.00 each and every one of you can
have the honor of a memory chip dedicated to your
    		children, grandparents, parents....
I guess by the fact that I was allowed in I must be a member
(didn't Groucho say something about the respectability of any
club that would have him as a member).
