While in Philadelphia for an AI conference last month, I had the good fortune 
to visit the National Museum of American Jewish History.  Opened on July 4, 
1976, the museum "preserves, documents and records the rich history of Jewish 
life in America."  It has growing collections of art, artifacts and archival 
materials.  Its permanent exhibition, called "The American Jewish Experience," 
shows three centuries of Jewish participation in American life in a 
chronological survey.

In addition to the various exhibits, the museum has a reference library, a 
slide library of art and artifacts, and a collection of films and videotapes.  
Special programs include lectures, workshops, film series and concerts.  The 
museum shop has original artwork and a good selection of gifts and ritual 
objects.

The museum building also houses the synagogue for congregation Mikveh Israel, 
which was founded in 1740 and preserves the Sephardic heritage.

So, if you get to Philadelphia, put this museum on your list of places to 
visit.  It's located in the Independence Mall at 55 N. Fifth Street.  Phone is 
215-923-3811.  Open Sunday through Thursday, with Friday hours by appointment.

	I'd like to add a plug for the museum. Both of my parents grew up in Philly, and when we went up to visit grandparents or friends we would often stop at the museum. It's nearly across the street from the Libery Bell and Independence Hall, so if you're there sightseeting, you really haven't got a good excuse for not going. The museum is closed on Shabbat, but they invite you to come worship with the congretation then, if you desire! Dave (still remebering, just remembering, Pat's Steaks)
