168.0. "Jews in DEC -- Quanto ?" by ZEPPO::MAHLER (Michael) Mon Aug 11 1986 13:27

    Is it possible to obtain information about the number of Jews
    in DEC ? I don't remember them asking, though you are not
    REQUIRED to answer if they asked.

    	In Massachusetts it is against the law to ask any employee his
    race, creed or religion. This law is in effect in other states too.

    When I applied for a mortgage loan about a year ago the application
    had an optional question asking for my race. The loan officer said
    I don't have to answer it but as soon as I leave the office he will
    write "white" on the application.

    DEC has to show that it is not discriminating because of race. Perhaps
    this is the way DEC reports its figures to the government.

    DEC does keep numbers on race, such as white, black, hispanic, asian,
    female. This is to staisfy the government EEO requirements. However,
    it does not ask religion, and therfore would not have figures on
    the number of Jews, Catholics, Baptists, Muslims, etc.

168.5People don't matter, money doesYOUNG::YOUNGThu Aug 21 1986 17:1911
    I think it's also against Jewish law to count people. Something
    like, "They did it once in biblical days, and a plague fell upon
    them, so they don't do it any more". The way they got around that
    was to require a coin, I think a half sheckel, from each person,
    and they counted the number of coins.

    So, if each Jew in DEC would send me a dollar, I will report on
    how many dollars I receive, and therefore how many Jews in DEC.

    By the way, if I DO receive any money from that last offer, I will
    donate it to charity. (Otherwise I'd never be able to explain it
    to the IRS).

168.7They do count...ELWOOD::SIMONFri Aug 22 1986 12:335
    Both Exodus and Numbers count people. E.g. Exodus says that there
    were 69 people going to Egipt. Or the division of the people after
    the exodus into thousands, hudreds, etc.
